  • Randomly Appearing Resources?

I was playing a games yesterday and had on more than one occasion resource bonuses spawn in different city radius's. That piqued my curiosity into the random events that can happen. I searched the forum for information, not finding anything on resources. I did however find posts that were quite informative such as the formation of volcanoes their eruptions and meteor strikes.

To the point, can anyone give me any information or redirect me to somewhere with odds of this happening, information on ways to increase the likelihood of resources spawning, or any extensive information on random events for that matter.

    That makes me sad. :(

I can't use smilies in my signature that makes me even more sad. :(

GooglyBoogly's thread on CivFanatics contains a complete (AFAIK) description of random events.

Thanks Petek, that helped. I don't know if they all have the same chance of happening though I am kind of questioning that, I seem to get the promethius virus and the weather based events way more than anything else(cloud coverage settings maybe having an effect on the weather events?). Also, the industrial and energy ones seem very rare, I guess I will just take his word for it though.

I have seen all of the ones listed on that list except the asteroid, solar flare and resources dying out. Makes me want to play on citizen level and build all the SP's at my HQ and see if I can get the asteroid to hit me.

        From the CFC thread:
Asteroid Strikes base (base is destroyed - never happens to an HQ)

Though good luck with that endeavour anyway, I still remember the only asteroid strike I ever had in ten years of play

Looking through that event list I somehow doubt that the sea beetles one is actually working/in the game. I always play with random events and have plenty of kelp farms, but have never seen that one.

Apparently they all have an equal chance of being selected (the two 20% ers have a secondary throw of the dice if selected)

I've seen every one, although have never been subject to an asteroid strike

And I was mistaken when I said an asterisk would never strike your HQ - I misinterpreted a Prima footnote that dealt with a single base being the HQ - thus never attacked (but because it was the only base, not 'cos of it being the HQ)

I've seen volcanoes erupt in open sea, ona continent, and, yes, inside a base radius in some of my games

          G.

He typo'd asteroid and called it an asterisk, but according to his later post your HQ can be hit. Which is what I was basing that statement off of.

Response to beetles: I had beetles hit one of my bases in a game I am actively playing today with the Nautilus Pirates.

I have seen every event listed. All of them, more than once. Not necessarily happening to my faction, but happening nevertheless. Many happen several times in a game - I've even had three asteroid strikes in one game!
I am on a mission to see how much coffee it takes to actually achieve time travel.

Most of the information in GB's thread ultimately comes from the Prima Strategy Guide. The SMAC programmers collaborated with the guide's authors, so the technical information (such as on random events) is considered to be mostly accurate. However, since the guide was written before any patches were issued, and before SMAX was created, some of the information may be outdated.

BTW, used copies of the strategy guide can be purchased on Amazon for essentially the cost of shipping. It contains other formulas and such, although the "strategy" is useless.

I've only had an asteroid strike once, but I hardly ever play with random events turned on.

That's one of the features that keeps this game interesting for me though, same as blind research you can sort of control it but you never truly know what they will decide to get you. If I were to start turning all those features off it would seem to me that I was playing civ 2 in space. And if that were the case, I'd just play civ 2.

Really curious now what am I doing different that I never see sea beetles ? Any ideas ? Do I need aquafarms built maybe ? Does it only happen to seabases ?

I do not know exactly. I was in the top three factions (I was #1) which was said to be one of the factors for a negative event, size of the base was over 4 (size 11) another factor.

It was a sea base and it did have an aquafarm, though I doubt the aquafarm would effect it, but I would guess that it would only effect sea bases, same thing for the tidal wave event I'd only expect that to effect sea bases as well. The only times I can recall either of them occurring is when I was playing as the pirates, which furthers my belief.

I've played the game for 7+ years mostly on trancendence, but I have never ben hit by these :

Sea Beetles (all kelp farms in base radius destroyed)

Tidal Wave (all mining platforms in base radius destroyed)

Am I the only one ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

I'm not sure but if I remember correctly sea beetles & tidal wave only affect sea bases. So maybe if we have few or no sea bases the chances for these random events are from slim to none.

I'm gonna make some experimenting on this.

I'm surprised so many people don't see these two events, but:

Speaking of which, approximately when I made the transition to XP (I am not sure) I noticed that many events which would display in a window would now display only via information text in the info log, or even without it. Countless reinstalls, adjusting game options or further windows upgrades never rectified that. Has anyone had similar experience?

Yes, I have. I am playing the game on XP and that was one of the things I noticed - windowed announcements being relegated to the ticker crawl. >_<
