Ya molly-- it seems el cid has been captured by the alpha bug

In a few weeks we'll see el cid posting " I wonder can I win in a transcend game where the other 6 factions are permapacted atrocity victims and I only allow myself to build 3 bases"

A couple months back my nephews were pawning through my CDrom collection and said to me, "Hey, what's this Alpha Centauri thing?"

The fools, for little did they know the addiction that would soon come to dominate their lives...

Seriously though, it was great fun introducing my most beloved game to a new audience. It was even more rewarding to watch them collaborate and strategize together.

Sadly, I cannot find my copy of Vel's guide. Anyone have a link to the purchase site - it's well worth another bit of cash for a new copy.

There is a link on the Spartan Chronicles, which points to booksurge.com. Booksurge.com now sells through amazon. Book is $14.99.

How do you do this? I keep seeing reference to this, but have yet to figure it out.

Probe a unit, then goto design workshop. The unit will be present, click on it then click "apply" for the design. You can now build that unit even without the tech to do so and now modify it. Say you captured a 8-1-2 (and you don't have chaos theory), you can change the chasis to give you a 8-1-1 or stick some armour on it for a 8-x-1 / 8-x-2.
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Spartan Chronicles is fan fiction. I remember a link for Vel's book at the beginning of the year.

When I went to it to answer the question about purchasing the book, I found that the booksurge link was no longer good. Further research showed that booksurge no longer sold their books directly.

I got my copy through Amazon. IIRC, it took several weeks to arrive.

Hi, vyeh - thank you for that link. I didn't know about that site.

I read early parts of the "Spartan Chronicles" when they were first posted and they helped a lot to get immersed in the game. I have fond memories of reading about Spartan officers listening to an opera performance at Morgan Industries and a Morgan trade delegation (probe team) chewing Chiron Pineapples in Hive territory. At some point I got confused with too many Corazon Santiagos running around and me not enough time to read it carefully enough to figure out which was the real one ...

Anyway, you may want to read again the opening post of the Chronicles and look at the author's name.

I'll save you the time - Kinjiru was the originator of the Spartan Chronicles. So it is all his fault!

There were lots of great SMAC atmosphere and situation posts, and it did help get me in the mood and 'feel' what the factions are like. Or rather, you could feel what the authors though the factions were like!

SC was great fun and it had so many great contributors. It did, like any anthology, develop a history that became rather weighty and convoluted. All we had was the broad outline Kinjiru gave us and ran from there. Googlie spent a lot of time compiling the SC into a Word document divided into volumes based on major plot changes (did it end up being 4 volumes and thousands of pages? I forget). I put together a timeline, a caste of characters list, and a post index separated into volumes at one time so I could keep track. I think Googlie still has SC text, indexes, SC SMAC maps, etc posted on his web site.

EDIT - well, I visited Googlie's web site and it doesn't have all the handy reference tools we developed. I'll have to pull them and see if he can post them...
