  • Drone Revolt feature on SMAC...

    A short and quick question...

Has anyone ever seen a drone revolt on the original SMAC? That is, have you ever seen a city revolt to another faction...

I knew this feature was on SMAX, but I never knew it was on SMAC until it happened to my just last night...

No, I've never seen it happen w/ SMAC, just w/ SMAX.

It happened to me once years ago, not long after I started playing it. I took one of the PK's base during late game stage and naturally it was big and full of drones. I had a lot of units and bases occupying my attention and I failed to notice that drone problem for 2 turns, so it flipped back to PK's.

Not once- either in SMAC or SMAX.

Something to look forward to over the SMAXmas break...

Well you will never get an AI base flipping to you in either version IIRC. So the only time it will happen is if a human player allows it to happen (usually through inattention)

I was stunned at first when I saw it happen...one of my University bases flipped over to the Spartans...

I was easily able to get the base back, but still, no where does it mention this feature in the original SMAC...perhaps it is an undocumented feature of the 4.0 patch...

From page 63 of the original SMAC manual:

                DRONE RIOTS

If the number of Drones in your population exceeds the number of talents, the result is a Drone Riot, which shuts down the base's entire research and production capabilities. If left unchecked, rioting Drones start to destroy facilities, and may even cause a base to defect to a rival faction.

You really have to try pretty hard in order to get it to flip.

I think in essence it has to be in full riots for two turns before it can happen. I think you can never get an AI base to flip even if you incited drone riots 20 times through probe actions

As for my bases I would sometimes like to lose one so I could probe-rape an opponent but thats just too much of an exploit and has been banned from MP

AI bases cannot revolt because AI has certain bonuses when it comes to managing drones. You can easily get a base to revolt - just have a base supporting several foils/MWs/rovers outside your teritory and run FM without micromanaging new drones. Bases seem to always revolt towards the nearest faction.

Actually, they can revolt, they are simply impecable on handling it.they will never end their turn without stopping drones via specialists.

I lost a base as univ in a pbem to drone revolts,to the free drones. fortunatly,it happaned in a reload i did to check out the situation, and not on the turn i played\sent.

Which is not necessarily a good thing - sometimes the price is too high, in the form of famine.

...and the famine-inducing bit is often one of the best ways to reduce AI overall populations without committing atrocities...

I once played a game where I tried to see how many civilians I could slaughter indirectly, and keep the 'noble' descriptor - twisted but entertaining for once or twice.

                              Drone revolt

Happened recently to me in a threeman game. I was letting the govenor handle it but the city flipped to the Gaians (another human player). Believe me, I didn't have to try hard. We hadn't even had contact yet being relatively early in the game. I used the opportunity to probe some techs but I'm not sure that was "legal". (Judging by the above post, its not) Does anyone know a standard accepted way of handling this situation? Another reason I hate drones....
