I don't know the game deeply (yet), and at the pace I can find time to play, it'll be so for some time.
But I get the impression (from reviews and forum "zapping") that there can hardly be a game rivaling in level of complexity, deepness and involvement, while STILL maintaining balance in all aspects.

Plus (and for me it's a big plus), it's sci-fi.
No matter how well they'll do with Civ4 (and I haven't played Civ so far, that's why SMAC was particularly difficult for me to grasp at first), it'll remain basically a non sci-fi game. I mean, no formers? No Echelon Mirrors? No Cybernetics?
And there are still chances that they'll mess something up, after all, while SMAC seems close to perfect.

Then again, classics are classics. Drop the rest, and play the classics I say
I still play Baldur's Gate 2 now and then, and I am part of a BG2 modding community.
I still have to try the DosBox emulator to run and play Master of Magic again (possibly the funniest game EVER made...).

Of course, it'd be nice to see a "technological" improvement for SMAC, like better graphics, advanced AI etc.

Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.
