Golden Age in SMACX gives +2 Growth and +1 Economy in a the city that gets it and is pretty nice when you get it.

Thanks binTravkin. I had no idea about the hard and soft quelling concept. Lots to learn !

As for the Golden Age, in my american SMAX a pop-up appears every time a base goes into a Golden Age.

In Civilization the GA concept is for ALL the cities at once, for twenty turns and only once in the game.

I think the GA in SMACX happens more than once provided the criteria are met and at a given base/s.

In SMACX a golden age lasts as long as there are conditions for it. By default, you get a popup only for start of a golden age, not for an end of a golden age (it still shows up in message tab, and there is even a voice telling you that).

Once again, if you are more familiar with the Civilization series, it would be easier for you to think of it as a rewarded "we love the king day". The name "Golden Age" only creates confussion here.

            I have a query!

I'm playing a game as Yang at the moment, and am build the ME in The Hive. I'm running x/Planned/x/x.

How come I can retool for anything with no mineral loss? Is it an unlisted ability of the Hive? Is it because of the +2 IND?

That is normal. Minerals from projects can be retooled for no mineral loss regardless of faction and mineral rating.

(In alphax.txt there is a line:
              2, ; Retool strictness (0 = Always Free, 1 = Free in Category, 2 = Free if Project, 3 = Never Free)
As you can see, this is the default setting).

The Skunkworks facility enables you to change between different production categories without penalty. Maybe you have built it in that base.

Skunkworks facility allows you to construct prototype units without the 50 percent additional mineral cost. The facility is useless.

This is why we're going to have the wiki detailing everything in SMAC! The retooling penalty immunity the skunkworks gives you is another undocumented feature.

(Oh, and prototyping planet busters ;P)

You only need one skunkworks built. And after the base that has it builds Planet Buster, there is no further need for prototyping or the single skunkworks you have. It is a waste of a facility slot. Nice to have overpowered Aerospace Complex though

Skunkworks, while not better than most facilities, provides versatility, due to its undocumented effect.

I was so convinced that it was called something else than Golden Age, that I didn't bother to check.

@BinTravkin : I'm still lazy so I just checked Warning Preferences and that says "Stop for start/end of Golden Age".

I got so annoyed by those popups years ago so they are always switched off. That is, not Random events - it's a nuisance to be told every time Kelp is expanding , but there are a few relevant warnings I want to catch.

                                Am I missing something?

                                Skunkworks:
                                1.Free proto
                                2.Free retool
                                3.?
