    Perhaps, perhaps not. Some people that think they are quite expert get stomped when they venture into PBEM. Others do quite well.

    But it is a very different type of play since you have to assume intelligent play by an opponent. When I do single-player challenges now I am rarely the fastest winner. Usually I "waste" far too many resources protecting my own empire against threats an AI would never pratically mount but which would be bread and butter in a PBEM game

      So true. PvP play bears little resemblance to fighting the AI. Given the ubiquity of infiltration, it is perilous to leave yourself even slightly underdefended against an intelligent opponent. The AI, on the other hand, can be routinely stymied by a handful of well-placed units.
