Still, they are just civilians and you kill them in cold blood

If they're armed, they aren't civilians. The others are collateral damage.
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

I see destroying the alien CPs as a nice bonus.

Destroying the CPs often leads to a handy morale boost for the low morale drop unit that just took the base.

How far do you think any unarmed people get on a mindworm infested planet?

Not far, colony pods get decimated by mindworms if they encounter them.

                    Correct. According to flavor.txt:

                    extracted from flavor.txt
                    #COLONY MODULE
                    Complement: 1000+
                    Composition: Prefab plastic
                    Hydroponics rating: indef.
                    Armament: Sidearms only
                    Armor: Passive (Applique)
(Notwithstanding if that colony pod founds a base, which you then obliterate, 10,000 citizens are put to death.!!)

                        This got me thinking....

How much people are in a military unit? Or a probe unit for that matter?

Of course a probe unit won't have the same amount of people than a military unit...

Depends on the sort of unit.

                          I always go for:
                          - company strength for military land units.
                          - a single ship for naval units.
                          - an airwing for air units.
                          - a small team (two or so) for probes.

They should've stuck to 1000 for city sizes, too. But those numerical conflicts aren't such a big deal.

Each population represents 1,000 people...however, when you obliterate the base, it says 10,000 x current population...this is an error...

The number 1000 is also much more conceivable...considering the few resources on Planet, and much less on the ship, I don't see it possible that 70,000 new inhabitants could survive...

Well - when your size-1 base commissions its first terraformer, (f you're like me and invest that first row of minerals in a terraformer), you are immediately tying up over 1/3rd of that base's population if it's just 1000.

                                See:
                                extracted from flavor,txt

                                #TERRAFORMING UNIT
