On the turn that the former finishes its construction, the land transport moves it to the next tile, so the former doesn't have to waste its turn moving. I doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you are just building forests, it saves you 20% (buy 4 forests, get one free).

        This thread got me thinking....

Is it possible to create a land-based missile transport? I've done a carrier deck/pressurized hull ship (my Planet Buster subs) and they are fun as heck. Park it off the shore of an enemy faction and unleash the nukes...

...Anyway, is it possible to make a land-based missile carrier? I never tried making one of these but it sounds kind of fun. I mean, for the pure funfactor...nevermind the actual practicality of the unit itself.

        Possible? No? Yes?

Nah, we just need Smac 2 so we can make the idea of land transports potentially more useful.

Yeah, cuz right now the AI doesn't know how to use them, or Aircraft carriers.....

You can also use a lot of land transports as an impromptu magtube before you have the tech or terraformers in the location to build them. Put a unit in a land transport, move him to another transport, load him into that one, move him to another land transport, and so on and so forth. basically make a transport chain on land like you do in the water. At least I do that, anyway.

I confess that I have never been a fan of mass numbers of land transports. Instead of 10 of those, I would usually prefer to have 10 more fighting units.

He's got a point, though. By isolating your perimeter bases from the outside, linking them to your core via magtubes, and using land transpots to give your attackers an extra movement point, you would have better chances of intercepting incoming land units. Could be useful on huge maps, where even needlejets take several turns to arrive to the front line.
