As far as things changing forever here's my shortlist of events I have to look forard to:
By mid October, become a father
By early January, know whether cIV is worth buying.
By late January (very possibly before) quit my job
By early May graduate
Sometime in between now and all that, find an internship, or a job in my new field.

04.09.2005. Damned uni starts again!

It's pointless, Firaxis is going to do Colonization anyway. So let us not loose our time for this stuff any longer.
We have to do SMAC2 ourselves.

I agree that Col will be next. Note the new Col section here at poly. Realistically I'd rather see a Col2 than SMAC2 because SMAC's glorious perfection can't be improved any further. To try would be blasphemy.

The secret thing is that the next remake after Col will be Gettysburg2 then SMAC2 then a remake of the Dinsoaurs-non-game2.

I think those of us who are dedicated to this forum and the game itself disagree very deeply here. There is no blasphemy in updating the game we love.

Something I think might be added here.

SMACX was done as commercial product. Firaxis spent some time on it within their limits, that were set up by financial reality. After 6 years of playing it, the community of this game knows it probably better than the team that created it, in the terms of strategies or visible game mechanics, that one hardcoded is sometimes difficult to see, if you do not have the source code.

So I think that many people here around can improve the game at various places and not sacrifice its depth.
E.g.
AI using crawlers better
AI better in using land transports
better naval combat.
etc.
