Or the planning stages, or whenever, what were some initial ideas that were cut or changed?

*Santiago was originally supposed to be a man.
*There were something different with the Peacekeepers.
*I know for sure that Yang's and Zakharov's symbols were different.

    What else?

A thread with old SMAC screenshots. Somewhat related to the thread.
If I had some time, I could talk about ages about everything that was cut out.

I believe they dropped the idea of different typesof weapons that would have difefrent bonuses against different types of armour

I digged up my old computer magazine in which they wrote about game in development, SMAC, . Among interesting things: Believers are called the Conclave, Hive is the Labyrinth, University is Archon, Peacekeepers are just Keepers. It looks like Hive's and Peace logo switched places, University's has a wrench featured on it, and one of strengths of Archon is listed as skillful engineering and support. It also has a wastly different graphic.

It is featured also in system.txt:
          95, ALIEN RED--NOT REALLY USED.
          142, GAIAN GREEN
250, LABYRINTH BLUE ;This was 208. No longer any good?? jsc
          62, ARCHON WHITE
          241, MORGAN YELLOW
          70, SPARTAN BLACK
          219, CONCLAVIST ORANGE
          227, KEEPER PURPLE
          208, TEST COLOR

Just a while ago there were some cool screenshots of the original and older versions...amazing...

I would like to see those polymer adhesives...land mines baby! Perhaps they wouldn't affect hovertanks?

                And stimulants? Can you say...STEROIDS!!

The change I would like would be sea sensors. I hate the micromanagement necessary to maintain an adequate patrol of the sea particularly once those cruisers are going 9 tiles. I think a seaformer or even a probeship or warship should have the ability to plant sea sensors

Easy. Just mod alphax.txt so you can build sensors in teh sea.

Apparently it doesn't work though since the game doesn't see the sea as being part of your territory and sensors only work inside your territory and putting a seabase nearby defeats the whole idea

Doesn't SMACX extend coastal bases territory out to sea? If so, you can at least put them at the limit of your territory.
Not much, but better than nothing!

Coastal bases extend your territory out to sea a distance of 1 tile. Hardly worth using for sensors, really.

Could you somehow increase the sea tile territory radius in the alpha(x).txt for costal bases ?

Only by increasing all territory radii:
8, ; Territory: max distance from base (ie, a land base)
A change in this lin proportionally affects sea base and coastal bas radii as well.
Problem is you can hardly eg double the land territory radius to get some extra sea territory: then you could claim an entire continent by building a single base on it.
