Problem is you can hardly eg double the land territory radius to get some extra sea territory: then you could claim an entire continent by building a single base on it.

Would this fix increase the sea territory of a coastal (on land) base?? If it doesn't , you are still stuck building seabases which are vulnerable in a direction that you wanted a sensor because you feared what might be out there

Oddly, increasing territory via alphax.txt doesn't seem to extend territory for the purposes of pacifism drones.

I just tested it, and it appears the sea territory of a coastal base isn't affected after all: it just stays one. I guess that's because the people who made SMAC made lots of stuff customizable, while the people who made SMAX (different ones IIRC) hardcoded more stuff. IIRC sea borders of land bases were added in SMAX, and were thus not linked to that editable value in alphax.txt.

Territory of sea bases is affected though: it's always half of the land territory radius value. So if you set the territory value to 16 (and accept that you most likely won't be able to build bases on a continent another faction occupies), you'd have sea territory of 8, which in combination with sensors should be enough to spot incoming cruisers. You still have to build sea bases, but I assume in the end it would be less micromanagement than a sea patrol.

...anyone else find it slightly endearing that the SMAC team left all those 'extras' in?

I guess that would make sense if they are still selling "Clue" in 2060, that'll make sense. But still, why would you need a bolt that big for any kinda of portable electronics?
