      Um... I guess.

I only hit the button once.

      Weird.

You can still download that original 100 turn demo version at many sites (incl. 'Poly) and mess around just to get a flavor of the game

And while you're waiting for the game to arrive, here's the SMAC manual

and here's the SMAX manual to read

Hmm - most just have a link to the now defunct Firaxis page.

here's one that's still active, altho you need to register with Gamespot first to get it

I think Blake missed the(very old point) a little. This game runs fine on the FAT system OSes, but the XP, etc systems need a patch.
            ----------
This game may be 6 years old, but it does not mean Civ 3 offers the same depth or fun. It actually should, but it doesn't.

I have SMAC/X Planetary pack on both XP Home desktop (3.2Ghz) and XP Pro notebook (1.0 Ghz), both work fine. Use "Complete Install" so no CD is needed to play, then apply Smac 4 patch, then SMAX patch, then WinXP patch and all is well.

                  Welcome to Chiron!

smacfan, I have been trying to get my copy of the planetary pack to run for well over a year now, and I just did everything you said - I still get the terranx.icd error.

and I just figured it out!! OVER A YEAR OF PATCHING, SCREAMING, AND TEARING MY HAIR OUT LITERALLY I FINALLY DID IT!!!!! I CAN ONCE AGAIN PLAY ALPHA CENTAURI!! WOOHOOO!!!!

I just applied all the patches IN THE EXACT ORDER smacfan gave, AND THEN I did this:

terran.exe I set to run in Windows 98/ME emulation mode, in 256 colours, no visual themes, and no advanced text services.

terranx.exe I set to run in Windows 2000 emulation mode in 256 colours, no visual themes, and no advanced text services.

I also added the old 'forceoldvoxelalgorithm=1' option to my AlphaCentauri.ini file and now I AM PLAYING SMACCPP AGAIN AFTER OVER A YEAR OF NOT BEING ABLE TO!! W00T!!

I should have also mentioned the 'forceoldvoxelalgorithim=1' option foir the INI file, which I did have to use on my P4 3.2Ghz desktop but is not needed on my P3 1Ghz notebook.

I did not need to set compatibility mode on either of my systems to get SMACPP to work, but I run in 1024x768 32-bit color on both systems (old eyes need larger text and icons). I don't use either visual themes or advanced text services, other than whatever WinXP defaults may be.

I guess I should also note that I usually apply all WinXP "critical patches" fairly soon after they are released. I have SP2 on both systems. Also I have DirectX 9.0c on both systems.

If it matters, I always use the "axstart.exe" method to start my games, this is the icon labeled "Run Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack" when you have finished installing.

Congratulations on being "back in the saddle again"!

                          nice thing.

I think I will run the game easy since 90% of people say me I can.

I patch my windows XP pro lot too.

                          I'm sure it will work.

If I can play the Original X-COM on windows XP I'll be able to play centauri.
It needed fix and I was able to do it. (I'm not programmer, only studied 4 months in electronics, but had a Pc at 6 years old at my house so I can do basics things myself ; I'm 22. It was a PC that you had to plug on TV because computer screen were not available everywhere. haha

I hold a scrap of paper in the darkness and light it. I watch it burn bright and curl, disappearing into nothingness, and the heat burns my fingers. Where has it gone? What has it become? I cannot shake the feeling that I have witnessed a form of transcendence.

You can get a 2000/XP patch here .

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is another one of those games that can make hours pass like minutes.

I haven't used it as mine runs fine on XP.
