No - I got that as well.

This one was called Toolkit for Civilization II - not boxed or anything, just a CD in a Jewelcase (Distributed by Walnut Creek - ref: ISBN 1-57176-189-6)

Oh, I have that- it's an interesting CD- has a lot of Mike McCart scenarios on it, if I believe correctly- along with commentary about how to beat civ... most of the info was harvested from 'net sites

        Xian,

I've put SMAX on every computer I've owned, too. I even put it on the various work laptops I've had (shhhh!) so I can wile away the long tedious evenings spent in hotels when I'm traveling for work (which seems to be an awful lot of the time - ack). I even bought a used laptop when I was going on vacation a number of years ago so I wouldn't be deprived of my SMAX, which is kind of pathetic now that I think about it!

Of course I feel no guilt whatsoever about the multiple copies since I own a good half dozen or more SMAC and SMAX original CDs. I learned early that a dead CD would cook you when a laptop ate my first SMAX CD. Panic!!! (before I learned of the no CD crack, at least) So, I got backups whenever I could. First SMAX CDs were available from a retailer in England for a very reasonable $6.95/ea, and then I bought a few more when the Planetary Pack came out. I gave a way a few of these gems to infect a few friends that had resisted being assimilated. Hehe.

Sometimes I like not playing SMAC and SMAX for like 3 months, then coming back and play. It makes sure that it never gets boring, like that would ever happen. It really makes it more exciting, same thing with civ...

I thought I had broken my addiction to SMAC/X, Civ III and especially Diablo II. I got a new hard drive last week and succumbed. I reinstalled them all and I must have lost three times as much sleep over SMAC/X than all the others combined.

Civ3 left me with a bitter taste. Overall, SMAC definitely has a better story, interface and many other elements. At the same time, Civ3 is more challenging: resource shortage, more restricted spying (i.e., all but nonexistent), more balanced air units (shard copter, anyone?), somewhat better AI and no rushing of wonders. I find it more difficult to cheese it. Basically, I still love SMAC, yet Civ3 has spoiled it for me.

What I'd wish is Brian Reynolds leading the Civ4 project, bringing back social engineering, some of the good old probes and interface. Or maybe a SMAC 2 . . .

better AI?have you watched it in an all visable game?its retarded.it can only compete cause the whole game is retarded to compensate

SMAC's ai is 10 times as good just for trying to compete in a tremendously complex game

I am sure the folks here are sick of hearing me say this, but SMAC players are the elite of video game players. I am serious about this. I have yet to find brighter, more creative gamers than the people in this forum.

After finding out how to play with 1920*1200 resolution and several new factions, I'm still playing like a madman.

Well, the affair was soo big that the last waves of that flood up only recently (search for the strat forums, not archive, where I started a thread like "question to veterans" - there it stands)..

And that blockhead now styles himself as "Last_Evolution" and is online every day on my ICQ contact list..

Why last evolution - he pretends to have brained out a new awesome strategy which worked perfectly till I got 2x-1-2 and 1-3-1 rovers..

Simply saying - he's just another blockhead who can't be called a newbie (because he has some 4yr expierence IIRC), but have learned almost nothing since I and some my friends here know him..

just finished a wonderful game yesterday.

I took over the drones who had an empire 3 times my size. Yeah I was technologically superior, but not by much. He just hadn't updated his units yet. He was still using 3-res defenseive units.

all I can say is drop infantry are the bomb! yeah I know the bomb is 90's slang. I don't know what you kids say today. pwns or something like that.

drop infantry are great for lazy players like me who don't like fiddling around with transports.

Still playing... but still scanning the gaming shelves hoping that something else as good will come along with better graphics and fewer bugs.

game seems pretty bug-free to me.

perhaps there are a few exploits, but you find that in any game.

Unfortunately, the designers never included an obsolescence algorithm. The AI will hold on to 1-2-1 defenders through the whole game if nothing ever attacks them.
