Good for you Hydro! As Hive you'll almost never need holo theater since you could use 2-3 polices to calm the drone and when you have more than 5 pop you and then set specialist that means you'll never really use more than four workers. Even with hyperdrones, you should be able to manage three workers without problem.

        Maniac,

My Spartan opponent is a gentleman called MasterBuilder. He visits Apolyton occasionally, and posts rarely. He's been my 'partner' in all my PBEM fiction to date.

MasterBuilder, haha. I remember him. I thought he was a Commie. Something about the "Hammerites", etc.

I am impressed with your detailed and insightful draft of your FAQ.

You'll have to post it once it is completed.

AC - MB did play Hive a while back to my Dee. His inclination is more PK than commie. Don't recall 'hammerites', though.

Did he mutter stuff about killing those "sneaksie pagans" as well?
He should be happy now that Thief III is released.

The scary thing is that I never did any much optimizing in SMAC, but nonetheless beat it at Transcend once. (As the Spartans, under the motto of "if it's not black, kill it".)

Ok now that I'm thinking about it. Energy banks give you 50% increase of economy, as well as tree farms. Although tree farms gives you more food from forest and increase for psych, it also has higher building and maintainess costs. However I don't see people building energy banks all over the place, but I do see lots of tree farms often. What is the driving force for that? Is it the clean minerals, is it?

Say if you have a size five base. You set two workers working on boreholes and three specialists. You crawl 2 farm/condensors. Now you are pop booming. Isn't it better if you build an energy bank and more farms/condensors with engineers/librarains other than building a treefarm with some workers working on forests?

You are quite correct that Tree Farms are an expensive replacement of Energy Banks. If the income multiple is all you are using them for then they should be fairly low priority in most instances. But they of course are the easiest clean facility to research, reduce terraforming ecodamage, and also bump up psych and double nutrient production from forests. The more of these things you find useful, the higher a spot on your priority list Tree Farms will occupy. I always build them ASAP, as I find most of these things useful, and the ecodamage stuff the most useful.

With an all-specialist strategy - and the corresponding low mineral production - are Treefarms ever needed?

                        I'd say not.

They could be nice in the late(r) game when the extra 50% Econ really meant something, though. Otherwise they're not really worth the minerals.
