I still don't understand what a mod is.

Oh, and sorry about the long paragraph thing.
Usually I use lots of paragraphs, but I was in a hurry and didn't feel like pressing enter.
Plus, I had minimized alpha centauri so I wouldn't have to exit and was checking my e-mail when it said somebody had responded to my post.

I think Commy is refering to the use of "mods" as in "modifications" to the game (as in, the reason why some people like to figure out formulae etc.)(\__/) Save a bunny, eat more Smurf!
(='.'=) Sponsored by the National Smurfmeat Council
(")_(") Smurf, the original blue meat! © 1999, patent pending, ® and ™ (except that "Smurf" bit)

mod.
1. Moderator (abbreviated).
Has power to edit forums, ban users, and lock this thread in 5..4..3..2..
2.Modulus Arithmetic.
The remainder in a division. 42 mod 8 = 2, as (5 * 8) + 2 = 42. 2 is the remainder when dividing by 8.
3. Modification.
The act of editing (or modifying) game files to alter the way a game plays. Popular modifications include Counter-Strike (from Half-Life) and Desert Combat (from BattleField 1942)

Mods are modifications.
Really? So like, do you change alpha.txt or whatever that file is and make a cool scenario where everybody gets to kill eachother, except with special rules so that the game is more, ah, what's the word, "balanced", as Enigma_Nova (god help me if I didn't spell that right) said. Now, for the REALLY stupid question, what is a PBEM?

Play By E-Mail.
Players versus players with none to a maximum of 5 AI opponents.

when you play by e-mail, is that like using your phone line, or pipeline, or whatever you use to connect e-mail? 'cause my e-mail's off of yahoo. How do you play off that? The only mulitplayer game I've played is hot seat with a couple of friends, and they suck (down with the spartans)

You don't even need an internet connection to have a PBEM.
You can download your turn from a public computer,
Carry it by floppy disk to your home computer,
Play your turns,
Carry the completed turns back and e-mail them.
The idea of a PBEM is that you recieve turn files, play your turn, and send the next turn files.
There is no sending mechanism in SMAC, so you'll need your e-mail program to do that.
