Aren't we all? You bit off more than you can chew when you took over this site?

So what exactly is in danger of not being saved here? I was directed here from this thread.

Apolyton as a matter of fact was 'unchewable' by anybody at that very moment and would have ceased to exist with the loss of everything.
For economical reasons it may be a good idea to drop the old server and all legacy projects. Right now it's costing us big money that will never return to us because the 'market' of these things is very very very very small. We are not doing so anyway because we love civ and it's legacy and want to invest in stuff that may only appeal to 10-50 people in the next 10 years. But it doesn't have our highest priority, which is civ5 at the moment. Despite that it hasn't our highest priority I am here trying to help you guys as much as possible, answering your questions, opening the old server for file browsing and digging up stuff now and then.

IIRC, the Apolyton deal was done behind the scenes. You were the only one offering to take the reins?

Anyway, you haven't really answered my question: what is in danger of not being saved? This question was asked in the SL sub-forum. Everything in the Archives sub-forum and all thread attachments prior to the move? I guess all files in the old downloads sections are history. What about hosted sites? Anything else?

The files in the old downloads section are on the new server. They have to be ligned up with the database.
          They're not in danger.

The archives hold a lot of threads. Very old threads in the archives are most probably lost.

We are looking into the hosted sites to see how to handle them.
Deleting these is not an option. So: no, not in danger.

Right, thanks. I'll pass it on.

              not being accessible.
any chance there will be any time?
The files are still there. The only problem is that the file path in the database is stored as absolute paths. So in the database you have something like this:

              but now it should be:

I've saved 125 threads from the AC - General/Help/Strategy archives, using the tip given here how to access them. Specifically, it's the threads listed in this post. (Note: all the links in that post are broken.) I think these threads are worthy of being preserved because they are mostly strategy discussions and hence have lasting value. I'm assuming that these threads will be lost when the old server is abandoned.

The saved threads occupy about 50MB, compressed to about 20MB. I'd like to make these files available to the SMACX community. Can they be hosted on the current server? Can I place them elsewhere? To be clear, I'm not proposing that the threads be recreated as threads on this or any other server. That would be too much work. Anyone who wanted to view these threads would have to download them to a local drive and view them with a browser. I can supply more technical details, if requested.

                Thanks for any advice.

I'll setup an account for you where you can place these files.
We are right now busy installing and testing a 'ISP' server for hosted sites. There we'll be able to give people space to put a site up. We're right now in the process of testing it. I'll let you know.
