  • ModCast #7: "The Zoo"

The seventh episode of ModCast is here, an official podcast of Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS). "The Zoo" (48m05s) features the four core panelists Wouter "Locutus" Snijders, Tony "GarretSidzaka" Kiehl, Kenneth "Impaler[WrG]" Ferland and Oscar "Elhoim" Velzi and guests Łukasz "asioasioasio" Maćkowiak and Luke "snafusmith" Smith.

ModCast is a bi-weekly ~45-minute audio production of Apolyton Civilization Site and is an ongoing effort to give the Civ community an interactive voice on Civilization modding; its sibling show PolyCast focuses on Civ strategy. To date, ACS is the only community on the web to produce its own Civilization podcasts.

    Summary of Topics:

    - 03m53s | Artist Sketchpad
We discuss NikNak93's Explorers, Francis I by Ekmek, snafusmith's Modern Vehicles Pack, asioasioasio's Industry Factory, an American Civ by Strategyonly and Tony's own Barack Obama leaderhead.
    - 23m48s | Code Corner
We look at Grey Fox's innovative SDK component Unit Fuel Mod.
    - 30m50s | Spotlight
We interview two of the most prolific Civ4 modders and artists about their work, background and how they learned their skills. Łukasz "asioasioasio" Maćkowiak talks about his Polish Empire Mod, Polish Tribes Mod, Map of Poland and of course his massive World War II 1939 Mod, which is still under development for Beyond the Sword. Luke "snafusmith" Smith tell us about his vast catalog of artwork and his Modern Warfare Mod for Warlords and the WWI mod Blood and Iron which he's currently working on for BtS (which among other things will include the Revolution mod by jdog5000).

    An ok episode of modcast.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

Finding the Fuel Mod was a very good catch, it is a very interesting mod since it willl probably be moded into a lot of scenarios from Cold War, Modern World, WW2, ect.

The discussion on it was also very good, especialy how you point out how it is impossible to mod the game so it would be possible to trade fuel in diplo.

This may be an odd question, but could the game be moded to use "events/quests" to make prescripted fuel trades in like a WW2 scenario (lets say you make Romania your vassal as hitler you get 20 fuel per turn from them) or even a fuel trade workaround for multiplayer?

Also its great to hear a new WW1 mod is being worked on! There was a wonderfull Civ4 vanilla WW1 mod, I've been waiting for a good BtS mod for some time, it looks realy interesting. I'm so excited by this that I would probably join the team but all that I can do well is XML and python. SDK seems just scary.

            "... protecting us from Canada."

On the Avro... well, how that turned out.

Sorry, but it's doubtful the mod will be completed now since the brains behind it (Snafu) has left on a tour of duty with the US army.

Oh, too bad, I assumed he had som kind of team working on the thing and it would be completed despite him leaving.

Good to hear you liked the topic.

You could mod the effects in for sure, that'd be fairly easy, but to mod it in such that it would actually show up in the diplomacy interface under 'What deals do we have' et al is a different story...

Python skill are somewhat rare and quite valuable in the Civ4 modding community, you may be able to make yourself quite useful if you want...

Pretty sure Luke(?) was referring to the Avro Vulcan we discussed in an earlier ModCast, not Canada's miserable attempt at having their own aircraft industry

He'll be back... (and he does have a team behind it, although I don't know what their plans are in Luke's absence -- but with any luck we may be able to answer that in an upcoming show )

It was brought up around the same moment about what bomber use would make sense for Canada. In re-listening, yes, the Avro Vulcan was specifically mentioned -- I had thought only "Avro" had been said. True, the Arrow was an interceptor and not a bomber yet it seems when you link Canada, aircraft and Avro in a few sentences near one another, it still draws me to thinking of the Arrow. What was miserable were the politics around its cancellation, but that's too off-topic a conversation for here.

Vaguely related: the quote you cited after mine was in fact Dale's and not another of mine.
