Not at all. It's more like donating money to a political party or a charity you respect. When you no longer support what it is doing, it's reasonable to ask them to cancel your subscription in support of their efforts.

This is exactly the kind of attitude that is at the root of the problems here. I signed up because I supported the site. This isn't the same thing as a cable subscription.Co-Founder, Apolyton Civilization Site

Apolyton is neither a political party nor a charity. Nor a NGO of some sorts. Besides, any time you purchase a service, you should read the rules. PLUS rules have said that there would be no refunds all along.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

PolyPLUS, to my understanding, was never about making money. It was a symbolic way of actively covering the costs of running the site. Passively collecting money off of advertising banners does nothing for the continuation of the healthy community needed to keep a site like this running. Asking members of that community to actively give over a token amount to contribute to the costs does. I now want that token amount back.~ If Tehben spits eggs at you, jump on them and throw them back. ~ Eventis ~ Eventis Dungeons & Dragons 6th Age Campaign: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4: (Unspeakable) Horror on the Hill ~

Yes. The bills need to be paid regardless. Having a sugar daddy foot the bill or relying on advertising is all well and good. But this creates an active bond between member and community. It's the exact same thing as passing around a collection plate at a church.~ If Tehben spits eggs at you, jump on them and throw them back. ~ Eventis ~ Eventis Dungeons & Dragons 6th Age Campaign: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4: (Unspeakable) Horror on the Hill ~

not really, people donate to the church thinking they will be saved from eternal hellIt's the exact same thing as passing around a collection plate at a church.
as for plus, when the "bonded" member requests a money refund from the community then your concept has failedCo-Founder, Apolyton Civilization Site
