As info, PEF does that, IIRC.

      • I'm civil to people who act in a civil fashion... many don't

And again, remember, when we contact somebody, there is a reason. It is not a social call.

The mods are thick skinned... because if I wasn't, I still wouldn't be doing this... As I've pointed out, many people have gone over the line in attacking the staff.

We won't roll over for that kind of bullying.

apparently one is supposed to just ignore bullying.

I've been working on it for a while, and it's almost done... the problem now is, if I were to post it today, Asher would claim that he was responsible for it. And he would tout at other forums how he controls everything and how he can make people do what he wants.

The truth is, it will be released after final comments by the admin and other mods... hopefully in a week or so.

I would certainly be in favor of more visible rules, but just from my own personal experience, I've never liked this approach. Always seems like the board's focus is on the rules and not the discussion. Kind of takes away from the atmosphere.

Then, if someone breaks a rule, you could simply pm them the rule that was broken, and state that it has earned them a warning, or a ban, according to the offence.

Such calm and unpassionate moderating helps build the community, and disables the cacophony of member-moderator wars, which definately never helped any site.
              This would be nice.

How can you simultaneously call for judicial like consistency, and at the same time not want visible rules?

If you dont want the focus to be on the rules, then just accept that the mods can ban whomever they please, no questions asked. If you want to go challenging their consistency, thats naturally going to lead to a focus on the rules.

                  • I find it very ironic that the "free Asher" contingent seems to be slowly moving toward a "ban more people; at least it would be consistent" POV.

I am not suggesting that you roll over! (or even play dead, or sit, or...nm )

I believe you are thick skinned and it is clear why you would have to be.

Just because you are contacting someone who is breaking the rules does not mean that it cannot be civil.

You say you are civil to those who act in a civil fashion. I am saying that you would get a lot more miles out of folks if you were civil no matter what their fashion...that is taking a moral high ground. That will also pay huge benefits to how that poster will perceive things in the future when they are once again (hopefully) a contributing member of this site.

Look, you are a strong willed and forceful guy. Cool. I am just saying that you could carry the same authority without resorting to a hostile tone...and that that would be very helpful to this site in the long run.

That does not mean that it is a "social call". There is a happy medium and it is the firm and civil way.

Please note that I am not trying to be critical...just offering what I see as a helpful suggestion that I believe would make your job easier in the long run.

Good. Cool. Seriously. That's good. It would be totally unfair of me and completely unproductive if I only criticized the bad and didn't praise the good. I'm totally in favor of a better FAQ. (And of course, my opinion counts for so much.)

Btw, there are a good number of typos and grammatical problems with the current FAQ. I'd be more than willing to edit the new FAQ for you guys. I'm a professional technical writer.

I haven't seen that movement. Where did you find it?

I see a move toward consistency and civility...not more bannings.

I just don't like the idea of a sticky thread on every page. It seems kind of in your face. Currently, a little lowercase faq link cluttered around the top of the page ain't good enough, but I'm sure there is a happy medium in there somewhere.
