  • Discuss the new forum layout here!

Can't believe no such thread exists so far.

Interesting change, with all the sub forums that havenm't attracted any new posts. Why not just merge them into the general forums? Civ2 certainly doesn't need any extra Strategy forum anymore, for example.

    Hmmm, interesting...

I agree. I think the Civ2 Strategy forum should simply be merged into Civ2 General/Help.

Ideally, I'd like to see the Test of Time forum gone as well and split into the Creation and General/Help/Strategy forums, depending on where each of the threads in it actually belongs.

I think the Civ2 Democracy Game subforums can probably be archived.

And this is only Civ2. Nice work Markos, but you should go much further

An excellent start to the rebirth of Apolyton...or just a tidbit of change to quiet the masses....

        Time will tell.

It's already being discussed over here... though it's not obvious by the title of the thread.

It's an improvement, but no replacement for merging in the long term, I think.

Never quite content, huh? That's how you'll give yourself an ulcer...

We're going to see how the current re-organization plays out for a bit prior to making anymore changes. One of the reasons I opted -- yes, it was me  -- for sub-forums as opposed to outright mergers was in consideration of the benefit of keeping related topics more integrated but still somewhat distinct. Again though, it's not necessarily a 'forever' arrangement.

As such, continued suggestions for revisions are welcome. Just remember to keep them... wait for it... civilized!

              We'll re-direct it here now (re: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...64#post4558564).

I understood what you meant but it might look to some as though you are redirecting it to the thread you just redirected away from.

Thinking it over, a change I'd like to see...

The continued division between Civ3 PBEM and Civ3 PBEM trackers is confusing, especially with the weird links-within-links that make it unclear what forum is at what level. I know you've already spent time seperating them out again Dan, but I think it might be best to simply merge Trackers back into PBEM; there's not much activity these days, so I don't think threads for new games will get buried like they used to.

As a general rule of thumb, it would be nice for all forums, even sub-forums, to be as accessible from the main page as possible. If the trackers aren't merged with the rest, could you at least list the trackers forum on the main page under Multiplay's subforum line?

There are "main" sub-forums, and then at times there are sub-forums within "main" sub-forums. I believe listing and linking to the latter from the main forums index page is more confusing than if it is not there: you access, for example, CivIII's PBEM forum and from there you then see and have access to its Tracker forum.

Yeah, I realize there won't be more changes made immediately, just throwing out the idea of putting all Civ3 PBEM back in one forum.

Yeah, I can see points to both approaches. One can be a bit confusing, one requires another click/webpage.

You do seem to be taking the more confusing approach within it, though. Inside Civ3 Multiplayer, both the PBEM and PBEM Tracking forums are displayed; but go into PBEM and you'll also see PBEM Tracking listed as a subforum there. (This is what I was referring to above with the links-within-links... it seems like it would be less confusing to just link to the Tracker forum from the main page rather than from the Multiplay forum if there is going to be a second link at all.)

I'm not a big fan of the sub-forums. I'm not sure many people know they exist. I didn't for the longest time .

I don't mind the sub-forums, but it would help if they made sense

I'm not understanding how "Civilization Series-General", and hence "Civilization (Non-Windows Systems/Platforms) [formerly the Mac Civ-II group] ended up under "Civilization IV"... That made it very difficult to find.

It seems like it would have made more sense to leave that under "Miscellaneous".

"Civilization Series-General" was originally and, until now, had been under the Civilization IV group because it was originally borne out of "beyond CivIV" discussions. All that moved yesterday was "Civilization (Non-Windows Systems/Platforms)" under the "Series" forum, and again that's where "Series" was. I hadn't considered a move for "Series" (and in turn its new sub-forum) itself.

Now that I have considered it, I agree: moved to "Miscellaneous".
