    Nostalagia... galore

Okay, so after realizing that all of the old alpha.owo threads were still up at the server, I started wondering if there wouldn't be an easier way to get one's hands on them. So I decided to set my mind on it... first I wrote a script that entered the URLs of all the old forum threads into a single text file, then I used wget to grab those URLs.

Of course, the topics were still a bit hard to browse, so I brought up some regular expression tutorials for Python and spent the next couple of hours writing a program that'd generate new index pages for each retrieved forum. The new index pages show the topic, first poster, date of first posting, and file size. The topics are sorted from the newest to oldest based on when they were created.

I've compiled the whole thing (that is, ALL of alpha.owo that was still online - over 9000 forum threads, 31.9 megabytes RAR'ed) into a single archive, but it's a bit too large for me to upload to my own webspace. Anybody want to offer me a place where I could put it?

You can upload it to Poly, than e-mail Markos or Dan about it. I´m sure they´ll host it, after all it´s a part of the Civ legacy

If we are lucky, Markos or Dan will show up. It's civ related so you might be lucky.

Yeah, right. 99% of gamers have never even heard of the game. And with good reason, it's mediocre at best.

Indeed, get in contact with Markos and myself privately about this if/when you have the archived threads together. I'm certain something can be worked out for hosting on Apolyton.

Locutus started it. I was just telling it like it is.

Just get in touch with me on IRC, as I said yesterday, so that we can work out the details. I've been gone for most of the day, so didn't get your message earlier.

Rasbelin got there first. http://www.stellapolaris.info/alpha.owo/Alphaowo.rar is the first place where you can download the thing - temporary location, will be moved over to Civilization Gaming Network once their admin gets online.

Okay, apparently the thread stored as 11/000152.html (in the "Non-SMAC Related" forum, called "A Good Laugh -- Testing") contains a virus ( http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/joke...JOKE_150ALERTS ). If you downloaded the archive, don't open that thread. I've sent a notice to Rasbelin that he'll take out that file from the archive, but he appears to be sleeping right now.

I never they had. Last time I checked CtP and SMAC were (very) different games, so any statement about one game has no bearing whatsoever on the other...

Most gamers, while they have heard of Civ for sure, have hardly played Civ games, or SMAC, or CtP. That's no indication. But among strategy gamers, SMAC is a known classic. There's a good reason why it has an all-time highscore in the PC Gamer magazine.

It's amazing, Locutus, how you managed to be unfairly harsh towards all games except CtP and Civ4 .

Once I reached "SMACceptance," I came to enjoy the personality of the game a great deal. Still, Yang's infinite (distance) missile bug - a bug that lead to my choosing 'Yin' as my ID - and issues with the AI not handling the workshop feature well eventually led me to lose interest faster than the game's potential might have suggested. Some things I miss from SMAC are the terraforming and the workshop (GalCiv2 gives me the workshop, though).

On another topic, has anybody noticed how poorly reviewed Rise of Lengends was? I tried the demo myself and was horribly underimpressed. In my view, ROL might well be the biggest faulter of Brian Reynolds' career. Does anybody have evidence to the contrary?

                                Any Off Topic threads?

I mostly hung out there as the wars of the SMAC forum kept getting nastier and nastier (until the utterly toxic end). Would be nice to see Brother Greg and the boys one more time .

Anyway, Solver is right. Strategy gamers KNOW SMAC.
