Personally I've never had any problems of any kind regarding this feature... I always have the search option set to automatic, so as long as I'm not in any text boxes of any kind, I just start typing to search.
Also it's good that some people have proper keyboard layouts... only an idiot would think to put the @ symbol above the number 2
