I understand why people would want to be a mod for a small forum, but for a community the size of Apolyton, being a mod is almost a full-time job

On the other hand, people are drawn to power
This space is empty... or is it?

              I'm guessing so.

He's threatening to go postal because he is a Poly plus subscriber, and to call in the law on grounds that the site doesn't specify rules of conduct adequately and that thus, the site is defrauding its users. Which law (Greek, Canadian or US) I have no idea. That's kind of dumb. Everyone knows the rules, and newbs to the site are given some latitude in learning them (I remember getting polite PMs from Ming when I first got here, explaining why something was done and saying I was not banned because I was new). Who doesn't know that PMs are not to be posted in public, unless the sender consents (and even that's dodgy).

Some of us got our Poly plus subscriptions to help the site and thank M & D for providing it (and for large avatar bragging rights), not to obtain some spurious legal leverage over the owners.

              Getting out of hand...

              • If you are not satisfied with a product, you get your money back. You don't get to have the incompetent retail manager sacked/sue the store.

You do the latter if the store's policies are illegal. Not that Poly is short of lawyers who would do pro bono work.

                  • I think that's a hard case to make when what you see is what you get.... maybe I subscribe to a policy of caveat emptor too much.

                    • And they may well come in handy. I'm not at all clear on what the legal position is for online forums where you pay. Presumably you pay for the services offered (which have been rendered), and still have to follow the rules, which presumably don't have to be laid down in stone for either subscibers or non-subscribers.

But there's a few presumablies there.

You aren't paying for access to the forum anyway. You are paying for things that you can still access even if you are banned.

People can still see your huge avatar, and send PMs to your huge PM box, and if you are surfing the site while banned, you will see no ads IIRC and will still receive the notifications and such and polymail (I haven't been banned in years, so I forget).

So you can't complain that something you paid for is being taken away.

However, lawyers are vile, reptilian scum and will surely find some other loophole to complain baout.

                          Certainly the case.

Also, it's not like you don't have an extensive trial period to see what the required rules of conduct are.
