  • OpenRTS new Civilization-like game project

Interested in creating modpacks for a new Civ-like startegy game?

OpenRTS is a new project founded to create a strategy game. We're creating it like a game-engine, so it will be easy to create modpacks. It features isometric graphics, networked multiplayer and single-player scenarios. The game is being developed using Python and SDL. The software is released under the GPL.

New developers are highly encouraged to join the project and contribute in their area of interest. We also need people interested in game design, graphics and creating modpacks.

The game and source code is available for download at openrts.org.

Keep in mind that we are currently working on creating new graphics, rendered from 3D models to 2d sprites. So the screenshots can be misleasing, and will improve greatly very soon.

I have always thought the "real time strategy"* games are silly. None that I have seen have any real depth, most are clickfests and the computer players rely on the fact that a CPU can move** much faster than a person.

I guess a significant part of this is, when everything is moving constantly in such a game, there's very little time available for thinking.

    * It is not real time. I have no idea why this was not corrected a long time ago.

    ** Not literally, of course.

Not a bad start, though it appears to me that the graphics engine needs work to be appealing to a modern player. I know how hard it is to develop your own game, though, so props on getting something done.

I wish you the best of luck. However, for every one of these threads I've seen, I've seen 0 games.

Well, there are some games out there that have been made by independent people, that are actually good and more or less finished.

I guess FreeCiv is the best-known example.

But you are right - most of the projects fail. In fact, 75% of real commercial programming projects fail. And that's when people get paid to do it, so you'd think they'd take it seriously. So it's no wonder you see very few 'free' projects that are worth anything.

I don't think FreeCiv is worth much really. They are basically making a worse version of Civ1.5/1.7 in a time where we have a good Civ4. But that of course are only my subjective opinion.

Well, it's more than most other internet game projects have accomplished.

Indeed it is. The ought to get credit for that.

You also have to remember part of Civ 4 is code bought from outside.

If you mean the engine, that's what many games do. And to be honest, I fail to see what would be the point of wasting time and money to develop a separate engine for Civ4.

                            Looks like a foolproof plan.
