Well I must admit that I saw this after my last post, if I remember correctly there were problems problems with non US/ non UK English OS version, but maybe that was just for the first version of the installer. However you can use one of the manual patches from the Apolyton Directory.

      • To clarify, the current apolyton download is a complete copy of my working AOM game folder from my PC. It has been tested by transferring to the lap top and will run as long as I have the ctp2 disc in.

Actual I my question was and is whether the download of AOM contains a texture.dat, since it contains a userprofile.txt it contains a ..\ctp2_program\ctp\ folder that contains a texture.dat in order to run your CD.

Of course it runs as long as you use the same CD, or any CD that contains an identical texture.dat.

I have two CDs: One from December 2000 and another one from let's say March 2001, the main different that the newer CD comes with the patch included and with a different texture.dat. The result is that I cannot run CTP2 with it as long as I don't replace the texture.dat in my ..\ctp2_program\ctp\ folder with the one from that CD.

          • That explains it then, in part at least. I received complaints that xplosiv ctp2 CD's from England were throwing up this error so I stopped getting them in.

And what is the part you don't understand?

              • I meant thatn there is another possible reason for people playing AOM getting a "cant find ctp2 disc" error.

                • This is an announcement to let people know I am working on the "Icing on the Cake" of AOM.

The diplomacy update meant that once you achieved diplomatic relations with ai (the more aggressive ones were harder, but eventually came across), you were in control of the game, a little too early IMHO.

The problem here was that AI rarely break their treaties against a more powerful player. But AI vs AI war would continue.

So I am working on an update that does 2 main things.
                  1) Causes the AI to possible cancel treaties if your aggression level is too high. As part of this, you may be forced at time to give PW aid to an ai or suffer an aggression increase for being heartless. More aggressive AI personalities will cancel their treaties earlier than passive AI.
                  2) In AI vs AI wars where the AI are close to the human, I am attempting to get those AI to make peace with each other and sign a peace treaty.

                  Some other things include:
                  a) making the AI attack a little better against the human,
                  b) a palace coup option in case you are facing sucession problems (which can happen if you find a King in a ruin),
                  c) multiple victory options (Science and diplomacy),
                  d) more ways for frenzy to go up and down, and
                  e) a small variation for which turn certain historical events occur (the current turn being the earliest now and they may ocur up to 10 turns after that).

I will also be looking at the across water invasion issue.

Work will then commence to transfer AOM to ACS.

                    • Which version of AOM are you using?

The latest Apolyton download is a complete copy of a game file and will not need patching with the activision patch. You should be able to play it from the modswapper in the main AOM_5.05.05 game folder after you unzip it or just copy and paste out of the zip folder if uisng Win XP.

If your game does not recognise the CTP2 disc (which has been happening in the case of some Xplosiv versions of ctp2 out of the UK), go to here and their are 2 fixes.

                        • I am sorry it tooked me so much time to answer, however i got a system crash, disc format and other nice things.
Right now i'm downloading AOM v11, so i decided to read through this thread...

                          1) the ai in AOM attack each other as well, and with venom. By about turn 300, most AI have lost or gained cities from other AI. I have actually benefited on an odd occasion from this AI vs AI war in that two invading stacks from different AI have attacked each other, leaving me to polish off the survivors. When invading an AI who has been at war with another ai for a while, often is easy at the start as the AI's main armies are campaigning elsewhere. If you are prepared and hit hard, you can usually capture several cities before the main ai force gets back.

                          2) If you have read any history, war is the biggest and most regular endeavour of humans. And the biggest cause, according to Lord Montgomery is desire for some one else's land or resources.

AOM with the supply rule now makes war the really big issue it was. I find that until my empire is well established and resourced, making big war all the time (as happens in virtually every other game) is not an option, you have to think very carefully. There is no way you can just go on the unlimited war path in AOM.

The amount of new stuff in AOM is really amazing, hats off and thanks to the design team for a remarkable effort.
Unlike any players i prefer to build my empire, carefully directing it to becoming scientifical and economical superpower, rather than militaristic one.

those who played CTP and CTP2 knows that two games are very different. Long time ago, while i was playing CTP, i got a very interesting geography - 5 large continets, two of them linked by landbridge, and few small islands. I started on the middle one, separated from others, with two civs nearby. After some time i ended up as ruler of my empire, having two rivals eliminated, and very good diplomatic relations with other civs, i could switch my production to caravans and capitalization. After some time i had many trade routes across the globe, many went through lands of my "allies". Than, almost without any reason one AI begun to pirate my trade routes, ruining my income and pissing me off. That AI was at war with another one (another "ally") so i decided i will bring my way of life to his cities, and declared war.

It never happened to me before, and after (maybe, cause i got CTP2 and didnt played CTP any more), but this AI got a peace with his opponent next turn, and few turn laters it allied with two other nations - soon, i was attacked from all sides.

back to AOM, and CTP2, and history of wars.
We know that for most of our history, world was at war, Europe was a great battlefield for armies of many states, kingdoms, and it continued till WW2. They were fighting for resources, moneys, lands, political influence - war was accepted solution to almost any disagreeament. You can see it happening in AOM. Difference between history and AOM is, that there were many small countries fighting each other, in CTP2 you have huge nations utilizing legions of troops.

HOWEVER, as i mentioned, i am the one who prefers more subtle ways of making things my way. I simply dont have a time and needed skills to do my mod, but i would like to see the role of money, trade, diplomacy and scientific cooperation increased in AI. I would like to conquer the world with my gold, bribing, threating, making agreements, monopols, trade unions, embargos. I would like to pay others so they would fight my wars for me. The destructive power of money, and diplomatic skills can in real world isolate one rogue country from global economy, why not do the same in game?

My point is, that one dagger between proper ribbs at right time my save thousands from dying, and those thousands may be putted to more profitable work for their king!

AOM is great mod, and it changes much, still level of AI aggresion is simply to much for me, remember what i wrote above, as for player who prefers to buy things, either for gold or technological advances, than simply to rip them from cold hands of my dying opponent.

Also, technological progress makes war much more unlikely than before - after invention of telephone, tv, internet, civilized nations enjoy war, but only by watching it at tv and playing games, not actually taking part in them.

Can you imagine, for example, Germany attacking France, Spain trying to conquer Portugal, Poland trying to take back Ukraine?

Now, what is happening in AOM in later eras, where technologicaly advanced nations should prefer peaceful cooperation?

For me this mod is great, but i really prefer intrigues and diplomatic negotiations than making wars myself, and so AOM looks for me more like turn based war-strategy.

                          • Just a few quick comments Evander.

I designed AOM to be more realistic and less abstract. As has been noted their is more war than in the original ctp2. Having said that if you have a totally peaceful approach, diplomacy is now very important and if you know how, it works and is of great benefit in AOM.

Once you get into the middle ages, you will normally find that the number of AI that may wish too attack you will drop off as you get bigger and by the modern age, usually it is much more peaceful.

I will make one comment though. Many people who play have some immature idea that no one should "covet their goods". With due respect, that is just not human nature, and never has been. It is only in very recent times that the scale of war (but not necessarily the amount of war) has reduced, mainly due to cost and the firepower of new weapons.

In virtually every developed country, people go home from work, enter their house AND LOCK THE DOOR. Why, because you cannot trust your fellow human by and large. I am sorry, but AOM reflects the sad REALITY of life. Civ 3 does not and never did.

                            • If you find the AI too much, can't you simply lower the difficulty level of play or is that a too obvious an answer?
