You are too kind. I could never rate him that highly.

Trifna: I realise you mean rating posters and not threads. My point was that people only rate threads if they are reminded to. I can imagine that people would only rate posters under similar conditions, or if they happen to be losing an arguement with someone.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

They have a poster rating kind of thing at gamedev.net. Basically, everybody starts out with the rating of 1000. Then, everybody can rate everybody else, but only once. So if I rate DrSpike once, I can't rate him again. (I don't remember if I can change my rating of him though.) Also, when you rate someone, you essentially have a choice of very bad, bad, neutral, good, very good. The specific number of points that adds or subtracts from the person's rating depends on the ratio of the ratings of the rater and the rated. Basically, if I am rating 2000 and I rate someone who is at 1000, that will affect them much more than if I were a rating 200.

The system works really well at gamedev, but I don't know that it would apply here as well. At gamedev, you have the incentive to rate people, because people mostly ask for help, or post help for others. So it's natural to rate the helpfullness. I see 'Poly as more of a socialization place, than a place to seek help. Sure, people seek help in Civ3 forums and what not, but really, it's more about being friends with people, IMO. So I don't know that the same system would work too well here.

          ?

I may not be the most intelligent poster. But I would hope a site like this wouldn't discriminate against stupid posters such as myself.

I know there is no free speech here, but I like to think not all of my posts are asinine. Most are for entertainment purposes only. It gets boring reading capitalism/communism threads all the time.

And it's not somethign that has to be public, but simply something for oneself. Now, I'm not saying that it is essential or that everyone would use it. I simply know I'd like to get an idea of if what I bring fits, and wonder if it would be worth it. I got the idea by seeing www.fool.com and of course myself wondering how I could do better for the same cost.
I don't want to know mine. I know a lot of people don't like me. It would depress me to see all my posts rated as a 1. I'd kill myself.

and I completely forgot we had a thread rating system!! Shows how much I use it.

Dissident, I never said you were forced to look at it
It's a private thing, not a public one. So no posting contests. But if no one sees it as interesting for himself... well it may not be worth the effort obviously.

I know I'm still interested in knowing how good/bad my posts are and do something from there.

...and a post rating system isn't going to answer that question for you... you are under the assumption that people would be serious and honest about it... trust me... they wouldn't based on past experience around here with thread ratings

Complex reasoning, provoking dialogue, and thoughtful analysis would suffer resulting in a trend of superficial postings of a comedic nature with dubious value.

Additionally, the increase use of smilies and graphics would strain the infrastructure of the Apolyton systems. Worse of all, the "popularity bottom line" would drive people to end their posts with a plea for acceptance which would cross the line of good taste. This increased competition for attention would eventually overtake all bounds of common sense and proper judgement cannibalizing all available attention spans and technical bandwidth.
