  • Ack! Ads for Civ III: Gold

Why are there ads for Civ III: Gold on this site?

It makes me sad. I had to complain over at CivFanatics as well.

Oh the sad state of fan-run sites when things like this occur.

Uh. lets see, cause the site needs revenue, and cause this would seem to be a logical place to advertise a Civ3 product?

At first I thought it was a complaint against Civ3, then I thought it was a comment that people would already have/know about Civ3 if they were at this site and so wouldn't need the advertising. To be honest I'm still struggling to see the source of discontentment.

They're better than the old adverts we used to have for horny goatweed.

        (sigh)

        Just.... (sigh)

You are aware that you can still buy Civ III: Not Gold and that Civ III: Gold is a waste of money correct?

So that's the complaint. I never pay much attention to gold editions. What's the difference?

He probably wants to say, that if you buy Conquests as well, which contains PtW, the "gold" part of Civ3 gold (= Civ3 + PtW) is wasted and you could get away cheaper buying plain Civ3.

It's more of a disappointment. I'm not that upset that the ad is there, just that there is no statement saying "Don't buy this, it's crap, buy this (Civ III and Civ III: Conquests) instead and save yourself some money."

I am somewhat saddened that there is a link to buy it on this site and at Civ Fanatics.

I am aware that Civ III: Gold is a poor purchase, but not everyone is. Not everyone who comes to Apolyton takes the time to read through the entire site or even look at the forums (or search them... even a lot of members don't do that).

In reply to Lord of the Mark.... Yes I am aware that the site requires revenue, but there are other ads, the store, and Apolyton Plus to generate it. This isn't my site, so I can't dictate how it is run. But I am a member and I'd like to register my disappointment with the ads for Civ III: Gold.

In reply to Sir Ralph.... Exactly. And Apolyton is leading people to that bad purchase.

I'd also like to say that the ads for the "Play the World" Expansion are also there and that's also a sad thing.

Well, if you decline Conquests, because it's a buggy mess of pre-beta quality, like I do, you still can save money buying Civ3 gold.

Many bad products are being advertised everywhere. There is no crime in taking the money

As the ole saying goes "buyer beware"

The forums are full of people's "opinions" on the value of specific versions of the many games covered here. Most people that come to this site are looking for information, and find it. If after that, they still want to buy the game... let them

If people buy a game because they saw an advertisement for it at this site before they even do some research to find out if people are actually playing that game, then quite frankly they deserve what they get.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).
