Looks like both Pete Carroll and the mighty Bill Belichick are gone. Here's the current Black Monday summary of NFL head coach openings:

    Team - Coach
    Atlanta - Arthur Smith
Carolina - Frank Reich (fired in-season)
    L.A. Chargers - Brandon Staley (fired in-season)
Las Vegas - Josh McDaniels (fired in-season)
    New England - Bill Belichick
    Seattle - Pete Carroll
    Tennessee - Mike Vrabel
    Washington - Ron Rivera

That's 8 openings - a quarter of the league! This is probably it for now, although Mike McCarthy could still get booted if Dallas has another disappointing playoff run.

Gotta say, Vrabel's firing in Nashville was a surprise. How that team remained competitive this year is a borderline miracle. It tells me Vrabel is a real leader who had great player support.
Probably a decent chance Vrabel just slides over to his old stomping grounds in New England.

Losing McCarthy would bother me less than losing Quinn.

I'm surprised they fired Belichick, he lost Brady and Gronk so what did they expect?

Maybe they thought he would have a contingency plan for when Brady was gone.

            They chose poorly

Las Vegas is in a pickle, the former player turned coach who replaced the guy they fired has done well but there's 2-3 people out there now who I'd love to get if Reid left KC. Specifically Belichick but Vrabel would do and if Bienemy doesn't get the head job in DC I'd give him a shot. I think the new Vegas coach was a LB or DL and the Raiders D is their strong point, but if I owned the team I'd consider offering Bienemy the job of running the offense. Did Belichick run the Pat's Offense?

My understanding is he's very hands-on, both sides of the ball, and hires disciples as coordinators. He's a defensive guy at heart, but he drove a lot of offensive innovations (eg the deadly 2-TE attack with Hernandez and Gronk) as well. You want Andy Reid gone? After one bad season?

I dont want him gone, I was speculating on a replacement if he did leave. Here's a statement by the company making helmets

According to VICIS, the "exclusive multi-layer technology" in Mahomes' helmet model "utilizes a deformable outer shell, RFLX impact absorption layer, followed by a stiff inner shell" to protect the quarterback's head. "This design approach is similar to the crumple zone of modern cars, effectively absorbing and dispersing impact forces at the point of contact," VICIS explained in their statement.

Kelce said he got in the huddle and saw his skin thru the helmet so I dont know what tough inner shell was left to protect him. Its worth the risk if the helmets disperse energy well, but I'd be interested to see what they use in baseball.

Great game last night with GB nearly upsetting SF.

Even with all the (well deserved) praise for Jordan Love, to me the story is the Packers D, which has gone from mediocre to outstanding over the final month. Some seriously good coaching going on in Green Bay.

Also - weirdly - its starting to look like the NFC Central will be one of the NFL's toughest divisions next season.

I was expecting a Purdy pick on that game winning drive. I still dont trust him after he had that stretch of bad games. But he came thru, keep it going. I figure the Ravens will steamroll everyone so its kinda like watching a golf tournament with the leader way out in front with the battle for 2nd.

well, my Chiefs and 49ers survived

but can KC win in Baltimore? Allen ran all over them, imagine what Lamar will do

Lions go into San Fran. Ravens blew the 49ers away and KC beat them in the SB so if they can advance they have some payback to dish out

New England - fired Bill Belichick -- hired Jerod Mayo (was Patriots LB coach)
Seattle - Pete Carroll kicked upstairs --
Tennessee - fired Mike Vrabel -- hired Brian Callahan (was Bengals OC)
                        Washington - fired Ron Rivera

Both Seattle and Washington are shown with 8 interview requests, minus one (Raheem Morris) no longer available.

Washington is said to have Detroit OC Ben Johnson and Houston OC Bobby Slowik at the top of their list. Looks like Bienemy just doesn't interview well...
Seattle's top choices are said to include Ben Johnson, Dolphins OC Frank Smith, plus Mike Vrabel.

                            3 defense and 2 offense

NE must like Mayo because thats a big leap... and less $. I bet thats why Belichick hasn't found a spot. Lots of new young faces in that group with lower salaries

According to my friends in Atlanta, the issue with Belichick wasn't the money. It was all about the power.

Belichick requeires all power reporting to him in the head coaching slot -- he would be head coach, GM, and head of football operations. That means handing over the entire football operations to Hoodie Bill with no checks and balances. That was a problem for Falcons' ownership.
