  • He called the defensive signals and was renowned as a student of the game and film room junkie. It's a big reason why Singletary played at a higher level than his physical skills might suggest. The fact that he was on a Super Bowl winner just means he had a better supporting cast. Urlacher was every bit the "defensive QB" that Singletary was, and arguably did more with less talent surrounding him.

He was a more physically gifted athlete than samurai mike.

Do you think Dick Butkus could chase down Michael Vick?

Urlacher is the greatest LB in Bears history.

Singletary wasn't even the best LB on the 85 Bears.

If super bowl wins is a factor in determining QBs, then they could and should be a factor for on field generals like Singletary and Urlacher (and, unfortunately, Lewis).

Is this what your daddy told you? You never saw Butkus.
You were 5 years old in 1985, so you can't really speak with any degree of knowledge about Singletary and/or the '85 Bears.

Give me a break. A QB has WAY more influence on a game than an MLB. By far.

I give Singletary his props, but it's my view that, given equal personnel, Urlacher would be Samurai's equal in leardership, and his superior in physical play.

                      • I saw Butkus. Live. Multiple times. Yes, when I was old enough to know what I was seeing.

The thing is, the game was very different in that era. There was a lot less passing, and LBs weren't asked to do much coverage. When they did, it was usually a not-very-athletic tight end. Plus, they were allowed to beat the crap out of the receiver before the ball was thrown. Still, Butkus has 22 career interceptions (Urlacher, 22 in 13 seasons).

Dick Butkus (6-3, 250, huge for a LB in that era) probably didn't have a very fast 40-yd dash time, but his short-area burst was extremely quick. He was a total beast on the field, and widely acknowledged as the most feared defender in the NFL. He was an intimidator, back when the rules allowed that to be meaningful.

NFL.com lists him as the 10th greatest football player of all time.

Butkus was All-Pro in all of his first 8 years in the league. The only year he didn't make the Pro Bowl was his last -- 1973, when he retired due to multiple knee and leg injuries. Also interesting: Playing only 8 full seasons (drafted in 1965), he was named to both the 1960s and 1970s All-Decade teams. Think about that.

Brian Urlacher had more speed, but Dick Butkus was the better football player.

Yes. It's not like film or television was invented... allowing people to watch events after they occurred.

Absolutely not. Not in any era.

Most of what Butkus did would not be allowed today. Watch highlights. Just about every tackle he makes would be a 15 yard penalty. Urlacher dominated in every aspect... coverage, run plays, pass rushing (though not used much in this role). Butkus could hit people. Big deal. He never even saw a playoff game.

NFL.com lists him as the 10th greatest football player of all time.
Big deal. Who gives a **** what a bunch of old white sportswriters think? Pro-football reference has him listed as #136... which is about where he should be. In his era, yeah, I would say top 10ish. But that's because the whole league was a bunch of slow fat white guys who couldn't run... and a TD:INT rating below 1:1 was enough to get a QB into the hall of fame.

So **** Butkus. The highlights are fun. But he is vastly overrated by old white guys.

I don't even think he would say he was better than Urlacher. That's the stupidest ****ing thing I've ever heard.

And what RB's did Butkus play against? Here are some of the one's Urlacher faced... Adrian Petersen, Marshall Faulk, Jerome Bettis... among others
and QB's Urlacher faced... Manning, Brady, Favre, Brees, Mike Vick, Donovan McNabb (before he was slow and bad)...
To us, it is the BEAST.
