Remember how Ed DeBartelo, Jr. was considered a "capologist". It's because he manipulated the salary cap so well. When he left for Cleveland, all that scheming and wheeling and dealing came to an end. Also at the time was when Steve Young left.

And common sense can indeed work on a number of levels - especially here when you consider that salary caps put lots of pressure on teams to jettison older veterans who may not be contributing as well. For example, Derek Jeter is definitely not worth what he's being paid and hasn't been for a few years. Football also has non-guaranteed contracts allowing for easier jettisoning of players (something necessary in a salary cap system). There are, of course, stars who jump to different teams due to free agency. But at the same token stars can be kept by a team more easily than in the salary cap NFL. It is the reason the NBA did the "soft cap" - to address the issues with the NFL's salary cap.

Hell, its even in the wiki entry for salary cap:

Generally, the practice of retaining veteran players who had contributed to the team in the past, but whose abilities have declined, became less common in the era of the salary cap.[9] A veteran's minimum salary was required to be higher than a player with lesser experience. This means teams tended to favor cheaper, less experienced prospects with growth potential, with an aim to having a group of players who quickly develop into their prime while still being on cheaper contracts than their peers. To offset this tendency which pushed out veteran players, even those who became fan favorites, the players' association accepted an arrangement where a veteran player who receives no bonuses in his contract may be paid the veteran minimum of up to $810,000, while only accounting for only $425,000 in salary-cap space.
And the last sentence is interesting - this practice was so widespread that veteran minimum counted for less in salary cap than what they were getting paid (though still more than rookie minimums, obviously).

Hamilton to the Angels - $125 for 5 years. Wow. The Angels appear to not care about throwing money around (nor do the Dodgers making it a fun hot stove league in LA this year).

He quit last year and he can be a pain in the ass.

A pain in the ass who hit .285/.354/.577 with 43 HRs and an OPS+ of 139. Though his defense is sub-par.

Well then. Take an Angels team who didn't make the playoffs last year despite a massively overpaid roster, and ... massively overpay for another guy.

$25m per for 5 years for Hamilton seems like it's too much to me. He might earn out, who knows, but he's such a risk... $25m for 4, or get some discount on 5. Even 25/4 seems too much honestly...

Apparently the Angels new TV deal is ridiculously good. Probably only second to the Dodgers' new Fox deal.

Oh, I imagine. Still doesn't seem to have helped them win a title though... as the NYY have proven, spending large amounts of money is not terribly helpful. You have to spend it intelligently, which NYY have done sometimes and have not done sometimes. LAA have, fairly consistently, not...

Oh, full agreement there. This is just throwing money around like a drunken sailor. The Dodgers have even done a better job with spending.

In other news, this moves makes it far more likely that Michael Bourn is going to be a Texas Ranger next year.

Frankly they're probably better off with Bourn. They could use a solid leadoff bat (and move Kinsler and Andrus to more appropriate locations).

                    Michael Bourn CF
                    Ian Kinsler 2B
                    Adrian Beltre 3B
                    Nelson Cruz RF
                    ? 1B
                    ? DH
                    Geovany Soto C (AJ Pierzynski?)
Craig Gentry CF (hopefully someone else here)
                    Elvis Andrus SS

? could be a lot of things, but I wonder if LaRoche + Bourn could fit under that $25M total...

                    • I love how silly people are. Serious sportswriter tweets: "Now that they have Hamilton, Angels should make a move for Dickey."

Erm, so your logic is that now that they overpaid for one guy, they should go out and overpay for another guy? Okay, sounds good to me...

                      • If they are willing to deal Trumbo, I think the Mets are wise to listen .

Almost... I think Bourn costs $18mil a year (worth it, btw). LaRoche is probably going to ask for $10mil, I think. But with Napoli and Young leaving, the Rangers have a lot more than $25mil to play with here.

I think the Mets should listen to any deal offering a significant player or prospect for an old pitcher who had one excellent year and is not terribly likely to repeat anything near the success he had. If I were a Mets fan I'd almost be begging to see him traded.

Sure. Of course you have a third player to replace, and I'm sure some of the Young/Napoli money was going to go to Hamilton... Not sure Laroche will get 10MM, though who knows.

I would lead you to this article, which says that idea is myth (at least in the realm of R.A. Dickey):

Like many others, I’ve expressed some bewilderment on Twitter about how the Mets are handling their negotiations with R.A. Dickey. Dickey was one of the game’s best players in 2012, and the Mets were…

And the knuckleball tends to make one somewhat ageless (how long did Tim Wakefield pitch for?).
