On occasion I've benefited from the deeper rounds on draft day. Danny Amendola around... 20th round in IDP last year? Steve Slaton in the 16th round his rookie year. Not sure how many others I can remember.

For the most parts, nobody's draft picks this late pan out.

The large benches do allow the best teams to "hoard" if they somehow get themselves into a position where they have 13+ guys who have some playing value in the league. In FFZ last year, especially, I was a horrible hoarder (they play with even deeper benches than we do.) In that league, I hoarded Ray Rice, Matt Forte, and Danny Woodhead as my fourth, fifth, and sixth string RBs, and barely played them. (Foster, Charles, and Mendenhall were my main guys.)

That's why Jag likes the deep bench. Me, I think the deep bench is very bad for the league. First off, it weakens the free agent/waiver wire pool, meaning that teams that happen to be severely hurt by injury are unable to recover; particularly in a 14 team league, where people I've never heard of are being drafted in the 14th round, if you have 4 RBs, and three happen to get hurt, you're done for the season. Good luck with the #3 RB for the Bengals or something like that. That decreases the fun managers can have with the league.

Second, it takes away a very important strategic element, which is having to decide who to keep on your bench: players with some known value, or players with more upside but less definite value. Keeping a couple of deep sleepers on your bench should be costly in terms of depth, not essentially meaningless - with 7 bench slots, you can have 1 safe QB, 1 safe RB, 1 safe WR, and 4 deep sleepers (or a few more safe picks, if you want; but with so many sleepers, you'll probably get a couple that are perfectly usable, so less need for safe picks). Of course, you could have a backup DEF and backup TE if you really want, as well. All in all, you have quite a few options, none of which are bad.
With even just five spots, you now have 3 safe spots and at most 2 sleepers - or a DEF and TE backup - or some combination thereof. Ahah, a difficult strategic choice is needed, where you actually give something up of significant value in exchange for something else!

A seven player bench is like playing Civ where every tile is a cow. Sure, you have some choice - what to buy with all that stuff? But in the scheme of things, not really that difficult. It's fair, since all of the other players have the same thing, but a lot of the strategic value is gone.

The only real value to a deeper bench, particularly in a 14 team league, is that you punish people for the more extreme strategies. Notice my TE options, for example. For whatever reason, I was allowed a fairly good TE; but that's just because Keller (and Zach Miller) were rather oddly undervalued. There were over 20 TEs taken before I took mine... with a 5 player bench, that wouldn't be the case (among other things because this would be the final round ) I can see some value to that, but I don't think it nearly offsets the two major issues above. A ten team league can have a deeper bench without as much trouble, since the first issue (quality of FA wire) is not that big of a deal [10 team x 16 spots = 160 taken; 14 team x 14 spots = 196 taken. 14 x 16 is 224, which is approaching true absurdity.]

Think of it this way:

14 Ks (I'm not allowing for backup Ks, that's just dumb)

270 total potential players (plus or minus a few deep sleepers). Some teams don't have a third remotely useful WR, some have four, but it balances out to about this, probably plus a few RBs when you add in the sleepers. We're drafting nearly all of them, assuming the league averages to a standard 2-4-5-2-2-1 setup:

That leaves 4 QBs, 8 RBs, 16 WRs, 4 TEs, 4 DEFs that are even theoretically playable left on the waiver wire. #2 RBs from a team whose #1 RB isn't really worth taking, and #3 WRs on teams that aren't coached by Mike Martz. Tim Teb-err, well, guys like Tim Tebow but with less upside, and rookie QBs who are destined to spend their season on their back (cough Andy Dalton cough).

That's why 16 players in a 14 team draft is actually harmful... we're basically playing the full NFL rosters, and fantasy is not supposed to be about playing _quite_ that deep of players. Maybe for really serious Fantasy players, but this is definitely not that level of seriousness.

Hm. I just think of it as moving the strategy from in-season to the draft. Don't get me wrong; I understand and sympathize with your POV, and shortened the IDP benches (by one ) last year, along with the drop from 14 to 12 teams. But I think overly short benches are equally bad, as they virtually ensure that an adequate replacement can be had at will, diminishing the advantage of superior draft knowledge. (I also see the flip side -- that strategic gambits can be more effective with a scarcity of picks.)

Seems like there should be a harmonious middle ground. Maybe we can come up with some sort of formula, adjustable for league size and IDP vs DSP, to determine an optimal bench size.

I think that you will find that having plenty of players available doesn't lessen the draft significantly, because draft strategy is always finding the highest value above average for a pick. Move that average up - still the same strategy. It does mean you end up with some actually very good players in the free agent pool, but assuming you have good drafters there won't be that many, except for the real surprises - and I think it's good for the league to have those real surprises out there. How boring is it just moving your players in and out of the starting lineup, as opposed to actually acquiring new players from time to time? I know that's most of the fun in baseball leagues for me ...

Theoretically, I think more trades would happen in leagues with deeper benches (i.e. someone who drafted 4 or 5 good rbs, but has sucky WRs, trades with someone deep WR bench) which would bring more strategy fa/after draft. But for some reason there is really no trading in our league.
