NFL - Are You Ready For Some Football?! - Off Season
Denver drafting a first-round QB this year should answer that question.
Orton is fine, but Cutler has a much higher ceiling. Did they overpay? Yes.
But I'm cool with it.
At the same time, it's a developmental QB who was demoted to 3rd string and who is not intended to play before 2011 at the earliest and probably not until 2012.
The Broncos have all intentions of keeping Orton as the starter for a while.
Oh and how about that Quinn trade? The Browns are looking kind of wise with that one this week.
But regardless, JRabbit, you have to admit that Orton with either Maclin, Nicks, Harvin or Britt would be pretty compelling.

"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi
At best, this was a cost-cutting move. Edwards hit an escalator in his contract that would have paid him a base salary of $1.65 million. That's not obscene for a backup quarterback. Fitzpatrick's base salary this year is about $2.36 million.
Yeah that is strange. I guess the roster spot might have been important to Gailey but Edwards wasn't even making much.

I don't think Orton and {anyone} would be considered 'compelling'. Orton and Brandon Marshall, one of the five or so most talented WRs in the game, wasn't particularly compelling.

No, I really don't. "Could" be compelling, yes. "Would" be compelling is a lot more questionable - especially if you put the injury-friendly Orton behind the current Bears O-line.
The Bears intend on having Cutler - for good or ill - until he retires. Denver is obviously preparing to get rid of Orton as soon as they can.

What's up with being so down on the guy?
3800 yards 21 TD's and only 12 picks last year compared to Cutler's 3600 yards 27 TD's and 26 picks
You might say yeah but Orton had Marshall; you need to compare Cutler when he had Marshall... yeah Cutler was better with talent around him than Orton is with talent around him... and Cutler might be better without talent than Orton is without talent...
but had Chicago not done the trade, that's not what the comparison would be... you could have had Orton AND the talent around him which clearly trumps Cutler without talent.

We saw him here, weekly. Orton is a fine QB, but will never be great. Good game manager, decent (but not great) arm, reasonable (but not great) pocket awareness. Loses poise under duress -- like trying to come back against Indy this week. He just doesn't close the deal. And he gets hurt in Week 9 or Week 10, every year.

Do you guys really need a great QB? I mean I know the Bears aren't what they used to be but the D and the running game can take a team far.

We'd like one. Also, have you seen our O-line lately?
They don't really show the Bears here in Philly... although next week, I'm sure Tuck, Osi, and Kiwanuka are just salivating at the thought!
I can't wait!
look at that! How does a pass rush turn into a footrace like that?
