I do think that unless you believe your team to be specifically incapable of scoring there due to some extreme circumstance [ie, you have on competent RB, your line is terrible, etc.], you go for it on fourth and goal from the one. Expected value > 3 points. See: Superbowl 44.

Especially with the CHI D vs. the DET second team offense (plus Megatron). Guarantee if you plugged in the stats EV of going for it >> 3 points. It's not a huge difference normally (something like 3.8 points), but 10 mins remaining is enough to go for it I think. Trust your D to hold them back, forget about the whole 99 yard TD thing from last year, and go for it.

Again, I didn't watch the game but the stats indicate that the Bears were having their way with the Lions offensively and didn't blow them out only because of the turnovers. Although, that also lends some credence to the idea of going for the points because they would likely be back down there again later in the 4th. But mightaswell get it going now. Cutler's a big body guy who can dive in or they could throw a screen to Forte who had a monstrous game receiving, catching all 7 of his targets. I'm not seeing why the Lions suddenly could stop them from getting 1 yard when the Bears racked up 463 yards of offense throughout the rest of the game.

There's a reason for that. It was a pass and all ****forbrains had to do was step back and create separation, then use his hands to fend off the defender. Instead, ****forbrains stood his ground and grabbed the defender, blatantly. He needs to be gone.

This was exactly the case. They had shown already themselves incapable of scoring there. And this is certainly NOT a Super Bowl O-line. The flaw in "expected value" analysis is that it does not properly value having the lead.

Now, some of the problem comes from Martz's playcalling (trap blocking instead of quick hitters; no sneak, no spread), but that ship had sailed.
