  • Williams excused it, saying then that Bryant, who received $8.3 million in guaranteed money from his rookie contract, would just have to take the team out to dinner and get him some new shoes.

Well, that dinner happened Monday night. The final tab: $54,896.

Bryant took the offensive players out to Pappas Bros. Steakhouse. Williams, however, made sure Bryant got the message, inviting defensive players as well.

And guess who was left holding the bill afterward.

"They got the young fella," said Bryant's adviser, David Wells. "What could he say? He had to pay it unless he wanted to wash dishes for a month."

Players ordered basically everything on the menu and even took home bottles of wine.

After checking out the 90-page wine book, it's anybody's guess if anybody took home a bottle of Chateau Latour for $9,000. It's also possible a few players ordered a bottle of PlumpJack Reserve for $600.
Damn, that's a pretty good month's pay for a dish washer!

Yeah I don't know why Imran wants to act dumb and ignore what anyone who follows football knows.

White runningbacks are fullbacks. That's just the mentality exhibited in the NFL and most of the time in college as well.

And someone might be like, isn't saying this racist? What? It's racist to admit that there are modern day prejudices about what positions white guys can play, similar to the previously long-held and universally admitted prejudices that Black guys couldn't play quarterback? How else would you explain the dearth of white runningbacks?

I think it's racist to imply that Black people are superior at playing runningback which is all you're left with to explain the Black domination of the position if you disregard the possibility of systemic prejudice against white players at the position.

The slow white guy stereotype is very pervasive.

        • That's the thing, Al. Too often, a person's view of reality becomes your reality. Not "yours", another person's reality.
Which is what makes the saying by Ben Frankin so tue. Once you're known as an early riser, you can sleep until noon. Very true. I've used that philosophy most of my life.

          • Hate to break up this woe is us white people circlejerk (seriously, when is the last time a white RB before Gerhart was really in the running for a Heisman?), but do you also get all upset at white "scrappy players" in baseball?

And yeah Gerhart may have been drafted earlier, if he didn't run a 4.5 40 yard dash in the combine. But focus on the race issue...

Not when the RBs selected in the 1st round ran a 4.37 (Spiller), 4.45 (Matthews), and 4.35 (Best)

And Gerhart's unofficial time was 4.53/4.58:

                        http://www.seahawkaddicts.com/2010-articles/february/rb-40-yard-dash-times.html

I don't see an official time on the NFL's site:

                        http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#tp-tab-set-1:tp-grid-container-forty-yard-dash

Regardless, slower than the three that got picked in Round 1 - meaning there is another reason than simply race.

                        • Dallas Cowboys question: What was Emmitt Smith's fastest 40 yard dash time?
EMMITT SMITH ONLY RAN A 4.8 IN HIS 40 YARD DASH AT HIS COLLEGE COMBINE....BUT IS STILL THE GREATEST RUNNING BACK ALIVE.

                              • The NFL is a copycat league. This year, everyone was looking for the next Chris Johnson, so 40 times were blown out of proportion.

I think Alby''s actual, original point -- that the language used in describing a white RB's speed as "deceptive/surprising" and black QBs as "athletic" -- does point to a certain amount of coded-language prejudice, perhaps more in the media than in the NFL.

I like to believe that, once the players are in camp, the coaches evaluate them as men and get the best players on the field, regardless of race/position/combine tests/etc.
