  • So I need someone to talk me down. The rather impressive performances by the Lions' first string offense thus far in the preseason has me happily wandering around imagining such outlandish things as 5-11, or dare I say it, 6-10.

Come with me down memory lane... not the winless season, the year before that... 2007... The year before (2006), Kitna had racked up 4200 yards, Roy Williams made the Pro Bowl after an impressive 1300 yards in his important 3rd season, the year when the great WR's usually emerge, and Mike Furrey, a converted safety, shocked the NFL with 98 catches. Ernie Simms was entering his second year and expected to be huge while Shaun Rogers was returning after an injury-riddled year. Dre Bly had been traded for Tatum Bell, a young quick back coming off a 1000 yard season, to improve a previously lackluster running game. Hopes were high going into 2007. Kitna even promised a 10-win season and a playoff appearance.

As the Lions had a 6-2 record by the mid point of the season, Kitna's promise seemed assured. Commentators could not stop talking about Kitna and his prediction. His immense faith in both the team and in God were making people wonder if God actually was smiling on Detroit.

And well, you know the rest.

      • Perish the thought, Guy. Why, with Johnson, Stafford and now Best, I think your boys have put together the second coming of Irvin, Aikman and Smith in Dallas. All you have to do now is sit back and enjoy the multiple Super Bowl wins sure to come in the next few years. The 'teens are Detroit's decade, baby!

If it helps, the Bobby Layne curse is over. He only said Detroit wouldn't win for 50 years...

            • Five or six wins is not unreasonable. This is the NFL, land of mediocrity. Even the Lions have hope.

After last weekend, I'm starting to think the Lions will beat the Bears in week one and perhaps even finish 3rd in the Central.

Did I go back in time? How will the Bucs finish in the NFC Central this year?

                • I agree. I just posted in another thread. The Lions are about to rock.

                  • Hmm. Leigh Bodden to IR. NE now has no corners with more than 2 years in the league, and the safeties aren't much older, while the pass rush is still suspect. Meanwhile, Brady is two years removed from his injury, Moss is playing for a contract, Welker seems good as new, and there are a few other promising new targets on offense as well.

Take the over on Pats games this year.

Yep, before the preseason started my Packer fan buddy bet me that the Lions would win week one. I couldn't take the bet fast enough. A month later I'm feeling really stupid about that one. Man, the bears could REALLY REALLY suck this year.

Though I'd say 5 or 6 wins are definitely plausible.

So what you're saying is the Lions' backups and practice squad have been consistently better than other teams' backups and practice squads?
