Well, apparently, the Giants were willing to make a good deal with Burress, but Burress turned them down:
New York Giants offered all of Plaxico Burress' future money in proposed grievance settlement
I mentioned earlier the Giants were willing to make a deal with Plaxico Burress to avoid a hearing with the NFL's special master on whether the team violated the collective bargaining agreement by withholding a $1 million payment of his signing bonus and claiming he defaulted on future roster bonuses and guarantees.
Well, I've gotten the details of the offer and it turns out it was a pretty sweet deal for Burress. And the fact that he turned it down shows you how much he really didn't want to be a Giant anymore.
According to someone familiar with the negotiations, the team offered Burress the chance to earn all of the money that was written into his contract from here on out. All he had to do was end his fight for the money he forfeited over the last four weeks of last season (base salary, roster bonus and signing bonus) during which he was suspended for "conduct detrimental to the team" and start playing by their rules.
It's unclear if the full $1 million signing bonus payment the Giants withheld would have been considered part of the defaulted money or if the team would have held on to only the prorated portion for the four weeks he was suspended (a little more than $200,000) and paid him the rest.
But what is clear, according to the people familiar with the team's offer, is the Giants would have allowed Burress the opportunity to earn the remaining four years on his deal: $11.5 million in base salaries, $3.5 million in reporting bonuses (which are actually behavioral clauses), $8.2 million in roster bonuses, $5 million in escalators and $1.3 million in workout bonuses. That's a grand total of $29.5 million that was out there to be earned.
The Giants would have packaged the deal in the form of a new contract and there might have been a penny lost or gained here and there. But they were willing to work with him and give him the chance to make roughly what he could have earned over the next four years if he hadn't blown a hole in his leg last November.
But Burress said no. Again, he didn't feel like he owed the team anything. Nor did he want to wear a Giants uniform ever again.
The real question for Burress at this point is whether he believes he can get anywhere near that kind of money over the next four years from another team - provided his legal situation works out, of course.

Death of The Neckbeard
Kyle Orton has reported to Denver, obviously intent on making a new start...
The Broncos' newly acquired quarterback arrived Friday morning dressed casually and looking younger than he does on TV, having shaved his scruffy, gameday beard.
Starting Neckbeard 2008...
Sadly, I couldn't find an A.D. (After Denver) photo yet.Last edited by -Jrabbit; April 4, 2009, 21:30.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

I think Orton is capable of making Chicago management look like utter fools.
More than capable. His attitude alone has evened the bet. Now, if/when he comes through, "Oh, **** me running".Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

The only one who can really make it look like a bad move is Cutler.
Orton's a good leader and has developed nicely as a QB. McDaniel clearly saw him as a good fit for his system. I hope Kyle's successful in Denver.
This is the kind of deal that, one you make it: no looking back.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

Hehe, as expected, now Jason Campbell is upset:
Campbell upset Redskins pursued Cutler
Though he's saying all the right things publicly, Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell isn't happy that his team pursued former Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.
Per one source close to Campbell, the 2005 first-round pick is "pissed" about the situation.
But apparently not pissed in a way that will prompt Campbell to whine and cry for a trade of his own. As we hear it, Campbell is using the situation as motivation to make himself into a better quarterback.
If the goal is to perform as well or better than Cutler does in Chicago, Campbell actually might not have very far to go. Last year, Campbell's passer rating was 84.3. Cutler's was 86.0.
The difference between the two arises from the yardage and touchdowns. Cutler had 4,526 and 25, respectively; Campbell had 3,245 and 13.
That said, Cutler threw 18 interceptions to Campbell's six.
The real difference could arise from the fact that the Redskins have a much better running game, fueled by former Bronco Clinton Portis, and by the fact that the Broncos don't have much of a defense, which forces them to throw more often.
Campbell also was learning a new offense, and Cutler wasn't.
Maybe Campbell can close the gap on Cutler, who now finds himself learning a new offense on a team with a better running game, a better defense, and a coordinator less inclined to have the quarterback fling the ball all over the place.

I wonder what would have happened if Pat Bowlen hired Raheem Morris instead of Josh McDaniels...

Just as Cutler has some history with Turner, it appears Orton has a collegiate past with Colorado...
...nearly a decade ago, back in the summer of 2000, when the highly recruited high school quarterback from Iowa [Orton] pledged to play for the Colorado Buffaloes. That commitment lasted but a week before Orton changed his mind and opted for Purdue,,,Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

Quarterback Jeff Garcia is returning to the Bay Area after agreeing to a deal with the Oakland Raiders.
Raiders senior executive John Herrera told The Associated Press that the four-time Pro Bowler will join the club's offseason workout program immediately alongside starter JaMarcus Russell.
Garcia spent the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, starting 24 games and leading them to the playoffs, but wasn't re-signed by the club.
The 39-year-old quarterback enjoyed the best seasons of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers, passing for more than 16,000 yards from 1999-2003.Hi, I'm RAH and I'm a Benaholic.-rah

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers extended the contract of their newest acquisition, Kellen Winslow Jr., by giving him the biggest contract for a tight end in NFL history.
Tampa gives Kellen Winslow a:
six-year, $36.1 million deal that includes $20.1 million in guarantees. With incentives, the deal could grow to $42.1 million.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.
