Big 12 honors: McCoy player of year, but second-team QB

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was good enough to be The Associated Press' Big 12 offensive player of the year. But he was not good enough to make the AP All-Big 12 first team.

That honor, announced Thursday, went to Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, who made the first team by one vote over McCoy.

As was the case in the Big 12 South race -- which saw Oklahoma emerge from a three-way tie with the Longhorns and Texas Tech -- the Red Raiders played the spoiler in the race.

Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell was the only other quarterback to get a vote from the 20 voters who decided the AP's Big 12 all-conference teams. Harrell picked up four votes -- one for first team and three for second team. Thus, the race swung on whether Harrell voters picked McCoy or Bradford as their second choice.

Three of those voters went with Bradford at second team and left McCoy off the ballot.

To emphasize how big of a difference that was, consider that Bradford and McCoy were both named on 16 of the 20 ballots. Nine favored McCoy over Bradford, seven went the other way.

Oklahoma earned a league-best six first-team all-conference picks, including linebacker Travis Lewis, the only freshman to make the top squad, and offensive lineman Duke Robinson, who was first-team last year, too.

Missouri has five first-teamers, as does Texas Tech.

Only three players were unanimous choices: Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree, Oklahoma State running back Kendall Hunter and Texas defensive lineman Brian Orakpo, who also was the defensive player of the year. This was Crabtree's second straight season as a unanimous pick.

Missouri Tigers sophomore Jeremy Maclin was a first-teamer at two spots, receiver and all-purpose, which accounts for his elusiveness as a returner. He was a unanimous first-teamer at all-purpose last season. His teammates, Sean Weatherspoon, a linebacker, and kicker Jeff Wolfert, are returning first-teamers. Weatherspoon is the only defensive player back from last year's first team.
      Crabtree is a sophomore.

If I was a voter, Oklahoma running up the score for a "record" would be a big negative.

And Texas clearly remains the best team in college football. We are going to roll over Ohio State like they don't even exist. Frankly, we should be play Oklahoma for the title game, because OU and UT are VERY CLEARLY the best two teams in college football.

I mean, Florida? They lost to Ole Miss. Come on!

I think Florida has a perfectly good argument to be playing in the national championships. If you don't like Texas not playing in the Big Game, then you have no further to look than the Big 12 directors. This one I actually think the BCS got right - practically a playoff, the champs of the two divisions that are far and away the best in football playing each other for the championship. The fact that the Big 12's system is a bit odd is not the fault of the BCS, but of the Big 12.

They should probably have a setup something like, "Top team in each division plays each other for the championship, except where two teams in the same division are in the top 5 in the BCS poll the week before the championship, in which case those two teams play each other". Or something like that.

That's not the case this year. The ACC and the Big 12 are far and away the best in football this year.

It's an off year for the SEC.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. Let's see here. Oklahoma burns up Florida. Who is Texas going to burn up? Is Tech still going to the Cotton Bowl to light the fires?

Incidentally--way to screw the pooch, Ball State!

First, flatly refuse a matchup with Boise State should you beat the lowly Buffalo Bulls, and then get blown out by those same Bulls and lose the conference title. Dumbasses.

Just for the record, the following teams would qualify for a Championship Tournament under the Guynemer Plan (only conference champs with 10+ wins vs. I-A foes and max 1 loss): Florida, Oklahoma, USC, Utah, Penn State, Boise State.

They would be seeded by final BCS ranking--probably the order listed above, though Florida and Oklahoma may be flipped. Prelims: Boise State at USC, Penn State at Utah. #1 will play the losest surviving seed, #2 the highest, on their home fields. Neutral-field Championship Game to follow. Now if I could only get my XBox 360 back from the repair center, I could play it out.

Texas and Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl?
Damn. I wanted at least an interesting game. This is one game that if Texas pulls a USC and wins 69-0, I'll be ok with it. At least it will be against a winning program, unlike the pussies at USC.

Texas Tech vs. Mississippi in the Cotton.
                              Ditto.

                                1. Florida
                                2. Texas
                                3. Oklahoma
                                4. Utah
                                5. USC
                                6. Alabama
                                7. Texas Tech
                                8. Penn State
                                9. Boise State
                                10. Ohio State

TCU, Oklahoma State, Oregon, and Cincinnati were all considered at #10, but 1-9 are solid.
