  • Kerry Collins 11tds 6ints
    Jake Delhomme 13tds 11ints

Jake turns the ball over way too much, not to mention Jake has a better receiving core than Collins.

Jake is rated 21 out of 31 for QBs ranked by passer ratings, thus I meant "below average"

    • Passer ratings are virtually the same, however (81.4 vs. 81.1). Delhomme tends to throw deeper than Collins (7.4 yards per attempt vs. 6.5)

If we look at FootballOutsiders, Defensive Adjusted Value Over Replacement:

Delhomme and Collins are tied at 14th best QB in the NFL.

In Value Over Average as well, Delhomme is also firmly in the middle of NFL QBs (15th, I believe).

      • So what you are saying is that with a great running game, an above average receiving core, and an good defense, Jake barely breaks the top 15. Yep, he sounds decent to me.

        • Certainly if you put Peyton Manning on that offense, they would be better, but I think you could say that about almost any team. With what they have, Jake is about average (that's what a DVOA of 14th means, basically, average, or slightly above - it means, if you took the composite-average NFL quarterback and put him on the Panthers, Jake does just slightly better than that).

I think he does fine, personally. I certainly would love to have him on the Bears... He provides enough of a threat [ie, occasionally tosses the ball deep to Steve Smith] to ensure the defenses have to keep at least one safety back there, and thus benefits his running game.

Correct if I am wrong, which I am probably since I don't know a lot about DVOA, but DVOA does not account for how good the players around the QB are just for how good the opposing defenses are.

              From the website:
DVOA is still far away from the point where we can use it to represent the value of a player separate from the performance of his ten teammates that are also involved in each play. That means that when we say, "Larry Johnson has a DVOA of 27.6%," what we are really saying is "Larry Johnson, playing in the Kansas City offensive system with the Kansas City offensive line blocking for him and Damon Huard selling the fake when necessary, has a DVOA of 27.6%."

              • No, it doesn't... but it's a bit of a fallacy to say that the recieving core is above average as well. Steve Smith is not the same WR who wowed us in prior years (though he's still Top 10), Muhammed is average, and the rest, below average (being generous).

The running game is very good though... but then again, one can say the same about Tennessee's.

                    • Someone, somewhere here, was considering who to start at RB, Pierre Thomas being one.

Bears won the toss in OT, thank God.

                          • Yay, Miami beat SF, 14-9!

Boo, Jets beat Buffalo, 31-27. 10pts off turnovers in the 4th Q, including the game-winning fumble return for TD.

Lions not getting absolutely killed by the Colts. But still losing, 31-21.

Titans down a point, 13-12 to Texans, 2 min warning.
