I don't think Tennessee is that good, so I don't rank them ... and Detroit is playing that well, against all odds. Halfway, they're in the top ten, as Imran says.

I regard it as a list of the top 10 teams in the NFL as of today. I would pick the Saints over Tampa, Detroit, Seattle and Cleveland -- today, heads-up, on a neutral site. I stand by their inclusion, and mock those who feel otherwise.

Absolutely. That's why I, like you, have the Giants at 10th. The Giants, though, have a larger scoring margin than Detroit does.

My list is correct. Some of the others are close.

But after the top 4-5 teams, it doesn't really matter.

Bears lose another Probowler for the season.

Ruben Brown was put on IR. Terance Metcalf to take his spot.

They've had an easy schedule and they have outscored their opponents only 200-185. Essentially, they're a 4-4, maybe 5-3 team that's gotten lucky. Their upcoming schedule is more difficult. They'll finish 9-7 and torture their poor fans once again.
And last year when they were 3-13 you could say that they were a much better team since most of their games were close. But I don't think they give out plaques for being a really good 3-13 team.

For years Detroit has just found a way to lose against all odds. This year, so far, we are finding a way to win. Point margin doesn't matter as long as they get the job done.

If they finish 9-7 I don't think most Lions fans are gonna be tortured. After 6 shameful losing seasons if we can finish above .500 and be a contender I think most of us will be quite pleased. Lions fans are far, far less optimistic than Jon Kitna.

Though I do think that Lions fans love having a QB who is so confident... and has willed the team to a few victories probably in part due to his confidence in his offense.

The great thing about NFL polls

is that there is a playoff system to PROVE who was right all along.
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

Nah, it's more fun in the arguing than in the proof. College football, you can argue for months afterwards (or ten years later ... **** Nebraska... ) while in the NFL you have to stop after the Superbowl

Not true. The Super Bowl winner is not nessicerily the best team. It could be the 'Hot' team like it was when the Steelers won a couple of years ago. It could also be because of some major injury... or just a plain old upset. The Super Bowl winner is the undisputed Champion.

If for somereason NE does not win the SB this year, they were still the best team.

                          1. The point of the playoffs is to determine the best team, according to pchang. Therefore if it fails to accomplish this, it has no point (according to him).

                          2. I'd argue the best team is the team that wins when it counts. Best is a subjective term anyhow.

                          3. I don't think NE will be the best team by the end of the year

The problem here is parsing the fundamental diffierence between "best team" and "champion." Teams get hot, teams have key injuries. Stuff happens. It clearly affects who gets to, and wins, the Super Bowl.

Those teams who manage to be both consistently atop the power rankings and holding the Lombardi trophy at the end of the season are remembered as the great teams. Those who don't get the trophy are soon forgotten outside their home cities.

The goal is to be Champion. Being the Best Team is meaningless without it.

I'd argue that injuries and hot streaks or cold streaks are part of what makes 'best team'. Depth is as important in being a great team as quality of starters.

Ultimately the best team is the one that beats the other teams. Any other definition is subjective...

It's the final exam. If they fail, they fail the year.
