Could be. More likely position. He plays central midfield in the international tourneys. At DCU and RSL, he didn't yet earn a central midfield spot and instead played on the wing.

Adu has had trouble being a productive role player. Part of it probably is that he has no desire to be a role player and just doesn't put in the effort. Besides effort, I don't understand why he didn't figure out how to be at least modestly productive on the wing.

In any event, I wish him well in Europe.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Well some players are just good in certain roles and not so good in others. Just based on their skill set. Adu is a very creative player, but I'm not sure has the skill set to be productive on the wing (speed and crossing ability). Just like, I hate to say it, David Beckham, who has a great cross in him, even though his pace isn't nearly as good as when he was younger. It makes him a far better wing player than central midfielder. Though LA Galaxy is going to use him in central mid, maybe with the relative skill level of MLS, it may work.

And also, I think going to a 2nd tier European league will help him develop better. For Adu's sake I was hoping something like PSV in Holland, but Benifica is just as good. He'll get playing time and the ability to develop, rather than sitting the bench because he isn't on the level of the starters in the EPL or La Liga.

          He's only 18.

Look at James Milner. He was inconsistent and easily brushed aside a couple of years ago, but look at him now.

Maybe a good cross is something you're born with. But it would seem that a youngster of Freddy's caliber (and left foot) could focus on it and at least develop a serviceable cross. That's what he was asked to do in DC, and he didn't do it.

Well, if Adu is exclusively made into an attacking mid in Benifica, I think you'll see him blossom. That's his natural position, really. If they move him to wing, I think the progression will be much slower.

                Inconsistent and easily brushed aside...?
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Yep, I don't really see Milner setting the Premiership alight anytime soon...

Maybe this can settle once and for all whether Agathon and MOBIUS are DLs.

DC United is just about sold out at 45,000 for the Aug. 8 match against the LA Galaxy. Merely the extra tickets sold for the match versus normal will pay for one-half of DCU's annual payroll.

I'll be on vacation in Florida, so won't be able to enjoy the beatdown.

It is slightly inappropriate, but all naughty b/tits are covered. I'm not embedding it, as the mods may object.

The front page of Soccernet.com is reporting that Newcastle has bought Alan Smith and Brazilian defender Cacapa (from Lyon) today. Smith will replace Dyer, who is being shipped to West Ham for 6 mil pounds.

                                Good piece of business
