The sad part of that comment is that hockey has so little profile that it took a thjread on poly to remind you that the Rangers are in the playoffs

    • Noticed that, did you?

I was a Rangers fan back in the 90s. 1994 was great. I watched for several years after that, with waning interest (both because the Rangers went to **** and because regular season hockey just doesn't have the level of play to keep me interested). I became a guy who just watched the playoffs (which my Rangers were never in). And then, with my wife's team also sucking (Bruins), almost without noticing we stopped following it altogether.

But I really enjoyed Sunday's game. Maybe I'll get back into it. Jagr is the only name I recognized on the team, though... and I still think he's a Penguin.

      • Crazy game last night for the Rangers & Sabres... the Sabres probably tied the game with 13 seconds left, but the replay was inconclusive so it was waved off. Wow.

Though some Canadians seem to prefer it having a low profile south of the border it seems. If that's their wish, they got it.

          • Winnipeg, Hamilton, and Waterloo all need teams...

I'm looking at you, Nashville, Florida, and Chicago.

                • If they cost >$100 a pop, like in Detroit, then no, they wouldn't.

Don't get me wrong. I want Florida, Nashville, Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Carolina gone. But you're gonna have to do better than Waterloo and Hamilton.

                  • I think you're way wrong, considering how many people live in the area and desperately want an alternative to Leafs games.

                    • They're so close to Toronto, might as well make it a second Toronto team. I can see that. Build an arena in Mississauga.

Winnipeg and Quebec should get their teams back. (Well, a team back. Colorado is fine.)

Hamilton in particular is a huge hockey hotbed.

A second Toronto team is a bad idea. People like me would love to cheer for a local team, but I refuse to let it be a "Toronto" team. And there's tons of people who feel the same way.

Hamilton and Waterloo are definitely viable cities.

Hell, Hamilton was extremely close to becoming an NHL city already. It went to Ottawa instead, even though Hamilton had pre-sold more season tickets.

Hamilton also has a nice, newish arena that seats over 17,000 that was built with an NHL team in mind.

                        • Hamilton is a long shot, but still a shot.

                          But Waterloo? There's no way.

But ultimately, why not just make it a Mississauga team, an Anaheim to Toronto's LA, a NJ to Toronto's NY?

There are some billionaires from Waterloo that would love for the team to be there. Something about a childhood dream.

Not to mention its location: it's fairly close to both Toronto and London, and has quite a few people in the area anyway (Guelph, Cambridge, Kitchener, etc). Also, there's a huge amount of 20-somethings living there who make quite a lot of money (tech stuff), combined with lots of blue collar people (auto stuff). Nice demographics for hockey.

And Todd Bertuzzi has a house there.

                            • Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Waterloo have a population of appx. 90,000?

Put it in London or Kitchener (both around 350,000, right?) instead, and you've got a chance.

                              • Yes, but Waterloo is basically Kitchener (it's commonly called K-W or Kitchener-Waterloo)...and has far more corporate support.

London doesn't make sense because it's a ~2 hour drive from Toronto, vs a 1hr drive in Waterloo.

Waterloo is 1 hr from both London and Toronto.
