It was not a clean hit, and it wasn't even that hard. But when you jump up on a guy with your elbows coming in a decent clip and whack him in the head, it is disorienting and the equipment can cut.

From another angle not in that clip, it looked like Cleary hit him with his shoulder. Also Phaneuf slid into the boards - he could have been cut there, too.

Though granted, Cleary did leave his feet.

It's usually hard to cut yourself on the boards...the flying elbow/shoulder is what did it from the angles I saw.

I'm surprised there's not more of an uproar over the hit, really. Cleary was targeting a star player, jumped up and hit the guy in the head nearly giving him a concussion.

Not only is that unsportsmanlike and a bit pathetic, certain people here cheered the guy on.

Should've been 2 for charging, at the very least.

Cleary did end up hitting him in the head, but was that his intent? Phaneuf was skating backwards a bit bent over. Cleary may have been trying to get a good shoulder check in, jumping to add some impact. By the time he left his feet, perhaps he saw he was going to miss Phaneuf's body, so he got his arms up to make sure he got body contact. He didn't lead with his elbow.

He lists Craig Button as a possible GM candidate for Columbus based on his "quality job" with Calgary(!).

Button, currently a pro scout with the Leafs, did a quality job in Calgary in his first go-round as an NHL GM on many levels.

Seriously, how ****ing stupid is this guy? Craig Button was single-handedly responsible for the drearyness of the pre-Sutter period.

Since I'm sure you're not familiar with anything west of Toronto, I'll spell out Craig Button's marvelous achievements:

He signed Roman Turek to a long, inflated contract.
He signed Bob Boughner to a long, inflated contract.
He let Martin St. Louis go for absolutely nothing (UFA).
He traded J-S Giguere for Matt Pettinger.
He traded Marc Savard for Ruslan Zainullin(!).
He almost traded Jarome Iginla for Mike Peca(!!!!!).

And for drafting? Something important to a "rebuilding club" like CBJ? All of 3 players he drafted hit the NHL in his 3 draft years: Matthew Lombardi, Chuck Kobasew, and Jarret Stoll (and for Stoll, he couldn't get Stoll to sign a deal, so he re-entered the draft and was drafted by Edmonton...)
