I think Pete Carroll may become the next Bo Schembechler, or Joe Paterno. Become a fixture.

DanS -- This was NOT planned. This was a train wreck of non-planning. All the top coaching candidates are gone. If firing Schottenheimer was the plan, they would likely have promoted one of their two coordinators.
Imran1 -- First, it's the team's decision, not the coach's, as to whether to grant permission for an interview. If anyone, it would be Spanos and AJ Smith granting permission.
Imran2 -- For Cameron and Phillips, "permission" to interview was automatic. Under NFL rules, no team can prevent an assistant from becoming a head coach. Teams can prevent assistants from becoming assistants on other teams. Teams can prevent their head coach from leaving to become a head coach somewhere else. But teams are not allowed to prevent an assistant from becoming a head coach.
In such cases, the "permission" is strictly pro forma, part of the league's attempt to create a transparent interview process, related to efforts to ensure opportunities for minorities. Thus, there is always a "permission" request for head coaching candidates employed by other teams.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

I would just like to say that I am available for the head coaching position at San Diego (though I'm not available to move
).
But I really tire of teams going for the same old coaches anyways. It's just a coaching carosel. The chargers should just take a chance on an unknown (like me
).

That's why I said aside from Cameron and Phillips. And And the Chargers ARE pissed at Schottenheimer for giving permission for his assistants to interview other assistant jobs.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Hm, so you say they're blaming Schottenheimer for granting permission to the assistants. (Link?) Yet Marty he was defrocked of final say in all other management decisions. Do you really think AJ Smith would stand idly by and let that happen repeatedly, coach after coach -- unless it was his lever to get rid of Schottenheimer?
Sounds like spin to me.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

I'm pretty sure
you have to grant permission as long as it is a promotion. Thus assistants have to be granted permission if it is a better assistant job (position coach to coordinator for instance). For the Chargers, everyone who left, left for a higher position.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

More hearsay and innuendo:
There is reportedly "increasing talk in league circles" that the Chargers have a secret deal with USC's Pete Carroll to be their next head coach.
Profootballtalk.com suggests that Ron Rivera and Mike Singletary's interviews are simply to satisfy the Rooney Rule before Carroll is named. Carroll wouldn't comment about the job through a spokesman Tuesday.

Re: I'm pretty sure
No, it's only a promotion to head coach. All assistant jobs are equivalent in the eyes of the NFL. Doesn't make much sense, but them's the rules.Originally posted by pchang

E.g., Rod Marinelli was Tampa Bay's DL coach for a long time. He probably could have been a defensive coordinator somewhere, but TB refused permission. So he let his contract run out and got the chance to be Lions head coach. (IIRC technically he was still under contract when he interviewed, but he wasn't re-signing, so it was going to run out.)Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Ben Franklin

There was also a sudden spate of invented positions to give the appearance of a promotion, e.g. Assistant Head Coach.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

Re: I'm pretty sure
I believe that role was recently changed to prevent that (except for assistant to head coach). Like a year ago or something, IIRC.Originally posted by pchang

I have also heard that some of the discontent was about Schott granting permission for some lower assistants interviewing for OC/DC jobs. He had a great deal of control over personnel, to the point that he was going to essentially force the Chargers to hire his brother ...<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

Nepotism
Re the poodle, I'm betting he's staying at SC. It's a sweet gig. He's on top of the world.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
