A Point = 1.14 million households. That is NOT a percentage.
    These two statements are facts.

And your insistence that a Point IS a percentage (rather than the FACT that is is a multiplier BASED ON a percentage) is just the latest example of your inability to have a reasonable discussion.

The problem is you are a one-dimensional thinker.

If a point is defined as 1% of the households, there is a strict 1:1 association we can use.

The fact that you are either unable or unwilling to make the connection makes it impossible to have a reasonable discussion with you.

You're not even disputing my point about increased viewership. My question to you is, aside from trying to "correct" me based on your inability to make a simple connection, and aside from you actually "correcting" me with incorrect information (the "approx 1%" comment), what are you doing?

Does it piss you off to get owned by somebody who thinks a monkey could do your job?

      These two statements are facts.
It depends how you look at it. "fact" from a semantic-driven artsy-fartsy one-dimensional thinker in that a "number cannot be a percentage", and a scientific multidimensional thinker who can recognize that that number is, actually, a percentage of US households...

This whole ridiculous discussion stems from your inability to comprehend basic links by definition. It is hilarious, truly.

Asher, I have never disputed the increase in viewership. In fact, I stated that viewership is up. I did demean the numbers as equivalent to background noise. A statistician would be quick to point out that the source of this increase is a year-to-year comparison based on a single Detroit-Colorado game, which is not a useful sample. But that's a different discussion.

Regarding the "approximately 1%" comment: It is accurate, although it would have been more precise to say "exactly 1% of the approximate (or estimated) number of households." But becasue the number of households is constantly changing, it is clearly an estimate. I refer you to your own Wiki reference: "As of September 2006, there are an estimated 111.4 million television households in the USA."

        Pissed? Hardly.

I helpfully defined ratings points and shares for you -- accurately -- after which you quoted a Wiki post that confirmed the definition of a Point. Still, you felt compelled to claim I was wrong.

I grant you that Points are based on the percentage of households with sets in use. It's how ithe measure is defined. But the meaning of the number is in how it is used. And ratings points are used to measure total viewership.

BTW, you should reconsider the "monkey" comment, as you clearly have no idea what I do for a living.

You told me I was "incorrect" and then proceeded to post inaccurate information that did nothing to dispute what I said. You were wrong in several ways, the most obvious way in saying that I was "incorrect".

BTW, you should reconsider the "monkey" comment, as you clearly have no idea what I do for a living.
I don't need to know, I can deduce your capabilities based upon the bizarre things you say here that a 5th grader could correct you on.

Looking at the post before my first one, it is technically accurate. I will cop to that. My intention was to differentiate Points and Share.

Other than calling that post incorrect, I stand by my statements.

Hockey on TV in the US just sucks. That's a fact. NBC could make more money running just about anything else than hockey. They are lossing tons of money by running Hockey vs far more profitable programming. Hell, the Stanley Cup was beat out by College Beach Volleyball. They were running NASCAR on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in October and November and getting ratings around 4.5. Other Saturday afternoons, they were running College Football and getting ratings even better than that.
My source from D.C. Comcast Sportsnet informs me that D.C. United has higher ratings than the Wizards and about 3x the ratings of Ovechkin's Capitals. I must say, those are pretty craptacular ratings for a team with a young superstar.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. It don't matter if you got a superstar if the rest of your team is the reason the team was so bad so as to get the superstar.

While its true that winning seems to fill seats and attract viewers more than anything else, I would have to think that Ovechkin is worth seeing even if playing for a crap team ( They are not total crap right now as they might even make the playoffs)

I love how Asher is trying to jack the thread away from the real simple fact that hockey on TV in the US Sucks... and that things like beach volleyball and poker are considered more exciting to watch. He will of course respond that Americans suck... that all the teams should move up to Canada... that his sport is better than anybody elses... while most of the rest of the world disagrees with him. He just can't stand the fact that Hockey is not really a major sport anymore

I fully agree with you that hockey on TV in the US sucks.

And as I've said before, I couldn't care less. Bring them to Canada.

I'm not trying to "jack" the thread away from that, because it's clearly been established. What was not previously established is just how little you and JRabbit know about your own field. Now that is established.

                      Peace!@

I don't know that hockey was ever a major sport in the US except in a couple of fragmented marketplaces.

Its tough to be objective since I grew up playing and loving hockey. I look at baseball and basketball and see sports that are, to me, so obviously less interesting that I figure everyone will feel as I do.

                        But it doesn't happen.

Oh and I intentionally left football out of the above list. Football, I like.

Only in your opinion... You insult people, and think that constitutes winning an argument. Everything I have said is correct. NBC could make more money running just about any other kind of trash sports program than what they make on their Hockey contract.

Reruns of the Andy Griffith show outdrew the All Star game by over 80%... but you want to stick by your belief that NBC can't make more money (and therefore is lossing money) by running just about anything else...

Feel free to think you are an expert... I'm sure in your own mind, you are one

Good news- Maybe NBC will show something more interesting like reruns of Deal or No Deal or How to Catch a Predator instead.
