    And how about those Leafs?

Hal Gill has been especially impressive.

The star of this particular horror show was defenceman Hal Gill, who made two of the most egregious turnovers you will ever see in 35 seconds, one with seven seconds left in the first period and the other 28 seconds into the second period.

First, Gill was the last man back in the Toronto zone and tried to carry the puck out himself. Now, in the recent three-game winning streak that followed the seven-game losing streak for this team of extremes, Gill showed he is a proficient penalty killer and at keeping order in the Leafs end.

But he is definitely not Bobby Orr, even if he is a former Boston Bruin. So, when Gill let the puck roll off his stick, Panthers forward Ville Peltonen was there to grab it and Raycroft was left facing a breakaway that gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead.

Then, before the flood was dry at the start of the second period, Gill decided it was not a good idea to carry the puck out of his own end. So he tried a long pass across the ice. This was picked off by Gary Roberts (great, says our culprit, another ex-Leaf), who ripped a shot past Raycroft for his second goal of the game.

A few minutes later, things got downright surreal for Raycroft. There on the scoreboard video screen was his heir apparent, prize goaltending prospect Justin Pogge, who is learning the business with the Leafs' American Hockey League farm team, the Toronto Marlies.

Pogge had a microphone and was told to exhort the 19,444 gob-smacked fans at the ACC to make some noise. "Hi, I'm Justin Pogge of the Toronto May- . . . uh, Toronto Marlies," he said, correcting himself just in time as everyone laughed at the Freudian slip.

No one could be sure if Raycroft were listening, but it sure did not seem like a coincidence that he coughed up goal No. 5 a couple seconds later.

Buffalo has lost two straight that I can recall. Montreal is on a roll. Habs looked near perfect tonight.
You know I love the Habs and I applaud a win over Buffalo but they gave up 44 shots on goal. I didn't see the game so I cannot comment on the quality of those shots but it does seem a lot for a near perfect game.

yup -- I saw the Hilights and they charcterize Gil perfectly on those two goals-- although they didn't mention that he fell down and looked like a beached whale on the first of those miscues

It also failed to mention that after those two miscues, he scored on his own net for the hat trick.

The Habs pretty much dominated the first period, if you ask me. Buffalo was able to keep them in their own zone a couple of times, and thats kinda how the shots got out of hand, but Montreal was never really dominated. It was quite a good game actually.

Dom just gave me a shutout. My three-week tailspin may be at an end.

Speaking of Detroit players, did ANY of you pick Cleary in the initial draft? Has anyone picked him up since. he was a 4th liner but in games I see now he plays second line plus significant PP and PK time

He wasn't drafted (why would he have been?), but Hot Mustard has since picked him up.

I figured he would not have been initially drafted given his historical numbers. But with what 13 goals in the last 20 games, he looks like a goodpick now.

It was just idle curiousity. I knew the guy when he was a kid

Well, looking at the players I drafted, I can say at this point that I picked too many players from the same teams 4 leafs and 2 lightnings. That's not a problem in rotisserie, but doesn't work in head-to-head. My No 2 and 3 pick - Richards and Elias - have been disappointingly average. I can only hope they turn it on in the second half.

Unfortunate but probably a smart move.

I know the Flames were hoping for a win to start to spread things out in the NW division a little. What is it?? 2 points that separate first from last there . . .

With the OIlers playing the Coyotes, I fully expect Edmonton to retake the division lead.. . . man Phoenix has looked just awful when I have seen them

The only upside for the Flames is that some of them can heal a little further. I know they were saying that Tanguay and Warrener MIGHT play tonight so a couple more days should ensure they are ready

Edmonton can look pretty awful too.

I am so hoping for a ECHL-level hockey game tonight.

Things way be looking up for Ottawa. Wade Redden returns to play tonight. They have won only 6 of 17 games he has missed. Contrast that with their 11-7-0 record when he does play. BUt IIRC they are playiong Tampa and WHO KNOWS what Lightning team will show up
