    PARDY TIME
Mirror Sport EXCLUSIVE West Ham's shameless players taunt ex-boss Pardew at Christmas party
    By Sarah Tetteh

DRUNK West Ham players mocked ex-boss Alan Pardew, romped with scantily-clad girls and scuffled at their Christmas party to shatter claims of being devastated by his sacking. New manager Alan Curbishley took over yesterday vowing to halt the third-from-bottom club's slide which saw Pardew sacked on Monday. But it looks a massive task after Hammers stars â€" including skipper Nigel Reo-Coker -went out on the lash despite the team being in desperate relegation trouble. Curbishley said: "We start with a clean slate. I will judge everything on its merits."

Which is just as well for Reo-Coker, who insisted yesterday he was distraught at Pardew's exit, that he had had no problem playing for the former Reading boss and that he was being unfairly singled out for criticism by fed-up fans.

But that looked far from the case during Tuesday night's knees-up at s****y club Silver in London's Mayfair.

The jibe at Pardew came as the club DJ grabbed the microphone from defender Anton Ferdinand and proposed a toast to the departed Upton Park boss.

Ferdinand, Reo-Coker, Carlton Cole, and old team-mate Elliot Ward all responded by booing and jeering loudly, then rolling around laughing. They then threw themselves on to the dance floor, pushing and shoving each other playfully to their favourite song 'Pow!', by rap star Lethal Bizzle.

Things turned nasty at around 1am, however, when midfielder Hayden Mullins was caught up in a scuffle and was bundled out of an emergency exit by security guards before being told not to come back. Wives and girlfriends were banned from the party, themed 'Hot Single Girls Only'.

Instead, the female company included reality TV stars Aislyene Horgan-Wallace, busty Makosi Mumbasi and a host of glamour girls who paid £20-a-head to join the Premiership stars' festive celebrations.

Ferdinand and Ward vied for the attentions of Horgan-Wallace before Ferdinand ended up smooching with her while Reo-Coker chatted up girls by inviting them to come and watch him play.

Striker Bobby Zamora joked about taking a bunch of revellers back to a hotel on the M25, but then insisted he had to sober up to take his girlfriend, Page Three girl Nicola T, shopping the next day.

Paul Konchesky was also partying but conspicuous by their absence from the raucous do were Argentinian stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano who have been the source of so much disquiet within the Upton Park dressing room.

New manager Curbishley insisted yesterday that he knew nothing of any problems within West Ham but it is clear his first task will be a major crackdown on discipline and to restore the morale of the players who fell out with Pardew. The club's nightmare run came to a head last week with a shocking 4-0 defeat to Bolton - the third of three straight loss after they had looked like climbing to safety.

Curbishley now faces a baptism of fire on Sunday when the Hammers host Premiership leaders Manchester United at Upton Park.

A West Ham club spokesman declined to comment.

Also it seemed that Sir Alex didn´t really want him to come on a trial. First they denied any interest and then after a few hours they said that he would be coming on trial?? Methinks this is the Glazers who want the kid to make some dollars in the US of A
He is a lightweight, but people didn't push him off the ball as easily this year (the season in the US is over). And to be fair, he hasn't been playing attacking midfield, because he's behind the league's MVP at that position. In order to get PT, he's been playing on the wing, a position to which he's had a tough time adjusting.

In any event, he hasn't produced on the wing, but he still proves to be the most creative passer on the team. Also, he takes all of the team's left-footed corners and penalty kicks.

No doubt it is a consideration, but Freddy is polished in front of the press, as you would expect from a teenage phenom from the States. Very presentable. On the other hand, he has made mistakes.

Re Altidore, he seems to have a knack for being a good target. Scored a really nice goal against D.C. United in his last game of the season.

        • Ahmet Ertegun died today . He'll mostly be lionized for running Atlantic Records, but he, along with his brother were the co-founders of the New York Cosmos, under Warner Communications. The Cosmos are probably the reason why the MLS is as healthy as it is today and why the US has seen a rise in the game since the early 90s.

The Cosmos brought in Pele, Georgio Chinaglia, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto along with a bevy of other stars, and brought soccer into the mainstream for a few glorious years in the NASL before it all came down.

          RIP Ahmet

Two giants of US soccer passed today with Lamar Hunt and now Ahmet Ertegun.

          • I was always under the impression that the Cosmos etc bringing in overseas talent held back the development of football in the USA?

I'm a big fan of Atlantic records, I didn't know the Cosmos connection.

            • Well, consider that before the NASL, soccer was basically a non-starter in the US. The US team that made the World Cup in 1990 (first time since 1950), to a man, said their big influence was the NASL. In actually getting to see big time soccer stars in the US and seeing the passion of the fans, it made them want to be soccer players. The 1994 team as well had their player take an interest in soccer as a result of the NASL.

The Cosmos were the reason for really any development of soccer in the US.

Not really. I mean now, with an MLS in place and whatnot, an NASL style mass importation of foreign talent would be disastrous. However, at the time, it had been 25+ years since the US made the World Cup and no one cared about the game. The NASL, the major professional league, was uncovered by sports media and had horrible attendance rates. The Cosmos, by making Pele the highest paid athlete in the world, and then bringing over Chinaglia, then Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, Johan Neeskens, etc. brought attention onto the game. Some other squads would bring in name players (including George Best, Johan Cruijff, Rodney Marsh, etc) but not to the extent as the Cosmos. The Cosmos ended up selling out Giants Stadium, which held 77,000 folks on a regular basis at the end of the 1970s, which was an incredible feat for a soccer league in the US at the time.

A great documentary to watch on this is "Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos".

Basically the Cosmos and the NASL created the grass roots due to people (especially kids) seeing world class soccer players for the first time. One can see this in the youth soccer boom that started in the 80s, the NASL having a massive impact on that.

It's a cup tie, no 'miracle' needed.
