I agree with this Math types will say "It's true, because 1-0.9999... = 0" which is correct for their way of thinking. For liberal arts types, the name of the item is as important as the contents of it; and 1 and 0.999... are named in a much different manners, and to them that's important.

To me I don't care ... I have no use for 0.999... thus it matters not to me what it is or isn't

That makes no sense, the only thing in the universe that is real is matter and energy.

In the REAL WORLD you never encounter .999... unless you're using some sort of symbolic math program.

If you look back, I preceded my example agreeing with the mathematical correctness of it. I was just pointing out some situations were correctness may cause problems. As always, you just can't simply assume that because it's correct that it will work.

While in reality you don't deal with .999...... much, you do deal with .333...... quite often.

              • Right, right.. but I just thought using programming languages as an example is not very good because it's so rare for people in their lives.

I see your a materialist, so am I

Let me rephrase it, matter and energy exist in descrete patterns that can be expressed with math. That math is real in the sense that it acuratly reflects the actualy or possible configurations and laws of our universe. Not all math describes a material part of our universe nor has every law or part of our universe been corralated with mathematics (yet). Math as we use it is a mental abstraction but its not JUST a mental abstraction, it's an abstraction based on empirical observation that have legitimatly discovered some of the most basic laws of logic. Using the simpler laws we have correctly deduced more complex ones and from them made successfull predictions of the material universe.
Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche

                      • considering I just read this article on wikipedia the other day, I have to go with yes. Though it just doesn't feel right, but it is yes.

Anyway its close enough to 1
