that early on he should not be putting DEI into the conversation and if the reporters tried to bait him on putting DEI in the conversation, he needs to shoot it down as totally inappropriate for the president to speculate about. How the hell could DEI possibly be at fault anyway? even if less qualified people filled positions owing to DEI it's not going to bring totally unqualified people in and if they weren't totally unqualified there's no way to fully explain the accident that way.

to be fair it was inappropriate for any press left right or center to be baiting him on DEI but no question any president has to take personal responsibility when they take the bait on something like that.
