It's worse than that, it's a widespread programming of these people. I mean they literally can only rabbit their Fox or KGB News talking points back. Had one earnestly reply back to me "Well Jordan Peterson said...". They follow these people blindly, cannot and do not question, akin to a cult. They are living in this different parallel reality and it's not just in the US, there are enough here who are the same. I can't even comprehend the vulnerability that has caused it, it's like a sort of zombieism; a psychological disorder.

The horrible thing is that the rest of the world needs to take drastic measures to stop this going any further as I don't know what proportion of the population is vulnerable to this. And we need to figure out how to counter it and deprogram it. It's insidious. But it has brought the world to this point and there is a chain of events in motion from the US breaking all reasonable expectations of their behaviour. I mean no one has been under any illusion that they are the "good guys" but things were relatively stable. But this just flips the chess board of geopolitics in the air and the pieces are about to come crashing down. Truly terrifying times.

tariffs on raw material production like metals, timber and energy can be especially toxic to the health of an advanced manufacturing sector because it can easily put the most value-added manufacturing at a huge disadvantage globally from having to pay more than their overseas competition for those raw materials. I guess he didn't learn the first time around when steel and aluminum tariffs immediately cost market share for domestic appliance and vehicle manufacturing.

Especially since it would take 5-10 years to build each domestic mine or milli. The big problem in the steel industry is over capacity in China due to state subsidies. I admit there is a problem with China evading tariffs by re-exporting through third party countries (such as Vietnam).

Only valid reason I can see for raising tariffs on steel or aluminium as a protectionist activity is national defence (e.g. if your industry shut down and you suddenly have to start building tanks, you are in trouble). I don't think that is a legitimate concern for the U.S. at this time as its industry is not about to die out, but even if it were, place the tariffs on adversaries and at risk supply chains first to stop them being a strategic dependency. Not on Canada and Mexico (unless you are about to make them an unfriendly nation)
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

For Trump it probably has more to do with rewarding steel worker and metal worker unions who flipped from Democrat supporters to Republican supporters in recent elections. He no doubt does hope to get new mills and mines constructed and to expand domestic industry but in reality none of those will even theoretically come online in the next four years unless it is reopening old closed ones which already exist (of which there are a few).

The biggest cause of metals over capacity in the world right now is Communist China by far. The Chinese have managed the previous 2017 25% tariffs by increasing subsidies especially for exports and they will probably do the same with this additional 10% tariff. The Chinese simply slashed prices so prices remained low and they maintained market share despite the tariffs. They also have resorted to exporting to third countries (Vietnam and Mexico are the biggest offenders) who then reexported to the U.S. with false papers claiming it was from. The second countries

He did not ban paper straws. He removed Biden 's restrictions on plastic straws. Please at least try to get basic facts right.

                          The Executive Orders says:

"Section 1. Policy. An irrational campaign against plastic straws has resulted in major cities, States, and businesses banning the use or automatic inclusion of plastic straws with beverages. Plastic straws are often replaced by paper straws, which are nonfunctional, use chemicals that may carry risks to human health, are more expensive to produce than plastic straws, and often force users to use multiple straws. Additionally, paper straws sometimes come individually wrapped in plastic, undermining the environmental argument for their use.

It is therefore the policy of the United States to end the use of paper straws.

Sec. 2. Purchases of Paper Straws by the Federal Government. (a) The heads of executive departments and agencies (agencies) shall take all appropriate action to eliminate the procurement of paper straws and otherwise ensure that paper straws are no longer provided within agency buildings.

                          ...

                          (c) Within 45 days of the date of this order, the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, in coordination with relevant agencies, shall issue a National Strategy to End the Use of Paper Straws."

Sounds like a paper straws will no longer be permitted or heavily disincentivised.

So glad Trump is tackling this burning issue.

Once he went beyond simply ending any official favoritism in this trivial area of government operation, he went from replacing one misguided quixotic campaign tilting at windmills to a new one tilting at even more ridiculous windmills.
