Think about it. China vs the US would be far more of an issue than russia. In trade disruptions alone the world would hurt far more. Here we have China watching (and they do that well)... seeing how things have played out. For russia - not that good. What would china gain trying to take Taiwan - not that much. why did putin go forward with what he did? who knows? This whole mess Putin started has pushed back (at the very least) and probably canceled chinas plans with Taiwan. thanks putin.

Alternate argument is China will believe they've learnt from this experience what Russia did wrong, and therefore won't make the same mistakes.

China's top leaders and generals live like billionaires and millionaires (respectively). That money had to come from somewhere. Xi has to wonder what was sacrificed so he and his cohorts could live so well.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

China just released its defense budget for next year...a 7.1% increase on the previous year...which was an over 7% increase on the year before. China's military shipbuilding capacity is now 3 times that of the USA.
China's goals are China's goals...they bear little homage to whatever else is going on in the world. They will strike when they feel they are ready...period. The world may gain time by feeling a threat now, but China will wait as long as it takes for its moment. Western defense spending may increase for now, but it will wane over time. China's will not. Reunification is the goal. When they think they are ready, they will strike. We can only hope that they get it wrong. Putin, at best, delayed the inevitable and may actually have changed nothing wrt China's plans."I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We may surely debate whether the parts I quoted amount to an actual promise or not. Maybe he just made it all up for political convenience. Of course he devoted large parts of that speech to what he sees as western lies, so I thought he'd be careful not to do the sameBlah

When I was a kid delivering newspapers in San Francisco at 5 am in the morning our cat greeted me on the street. As I petted him 2 cats appeared on the steep hillside above us. The big one, bigger than my cat, came down onto the street facing us like a duel. My cat immediately took off up the hill at the other cat and there were a few seconds of screaming. I looked back at the big cat on the street and he looked as stunned as me. Take on the smaller ally. Trump saved the world for 4 years, then Brandon took over.
